1907 BASEBALL
Teams from Schuyler and Silver Creek battled on the diamond in August 1907. While we don’t know the final score of that game, here are some other baseball stats from 1907.

Ty Cobb with the Detroit Tigers was leading the American League with a batting average of .350. He also topped the runs brought in chart with 119. Cobb's teammate, Nebraska Native "Wahoo Sam" Crawford, led the league in runs at 102 and was hitting .323. For the National League, Honus Wagner of the Pittsburgh Pirates also had a .350 average, while Sherry Magee of the Philadelphia Phillies brought home 85. Home run king for the American League was Harry Davis of the Philadelphia Athletics. Dave Brian with the Boston Braves led the National League by belting out 10 home runs.

On Oct. 12, 1907 in Game 5 of the World Series, the Chicago Cubs won their first World Championship by defeating the Detroit Tigers, 2–0. The Cubs would take the final four games of the series after Game 1 was declared a tie due to darkness with the score knotted at 3–3 in the 12th inning.

RAIL LINES This 1915 Nebraska State Railway Commission map shows the numerous rails that once ran through Colfax County and neighboring counties. This was a golden era for rail service, before automobiles and truck transport became the go to means of travel.

The Union Pacific Railroad is represented by the dark blue lines. It was the first to lay tracks in the county in 1867. A U.P. mainline still carries trains through southern Colfax County today.

The Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad laid the first tracks in northern Colfax County in 1886. The Chicago and North Western Railroad (in green) later purchased and operated that rail line until its decline and abandonment in the early 1960s.

The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (in red) also had several branch lines in the area. From a mainline that serviced Lincoln, an Ashland-Schuyler branch line was completed in October 1887. The trains crossed through three counties – Saunders, Butler and Colfax – along their route. The rails between Schuyler and Prague were abandoned in 1941. In 1982, the line from Ashland to Prague was abandoned.

TRAIN CROSSING Burlington Railroad trains once used this bridge, located just east of the current Highway 15 bridge, to cross the Platte River. This postcard picture of the bridge was from the early 1900s, and judging by the ice on the river it wasn't taken on a July day.

Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad developed its Ashland - Schuyler Line in the 1880s. The rail service was for both passengers and freight. The CB&Q Depot was located between 11th and 12th streets and F Street. The bridge across the river was used until 1941, when the line between Prague and Schuyler was abandoned.
