“Shrimp Boat Mold” was included in Jack Leigh’s third book of photography, “Nets & Doors, Sh*****ng in Southern Waters.”

Over the course of two years, Leigh immersed himself in the world of the shrimp fishermen of the Lowcountry.

As technology replaced manual labor and resort developments replaced traditional oystering and sh*****ng techniques, the lives and fortunes of the waterman and river dwellers were changed forever.

Leigh’s documentation of the passing traditions of the South can be viewed at Laney Contemporary alongside the photography of Parker Stewart through August 1st.

Tomorrow ARTS Southeast is hosting the IMPACT magazine release party and Ossabaw fundraiser at Laney Contemporary from 6 to 8pm. Stop in to support ARTS Southeast + view the Jack Leigh and Parker Stewart: In Place exhibition.

Leigh’s “Leaning Oak in Fog” was taken on Ossabaw Island in 2002.

“Leigh’s black-and-white photographs in Ossabaw suggest a serene darkness to the island world. It is as if Leigh has stopped the constant convulsion of a sea island. There is somehow no sense of how unstable an island landscape made up of mostly sand and water can quickly become during a storm. There’s a still point to every photo — ” John Lane
