Blanche Nettles Powers’ “Understory” is an outdoor installation in which found architectural elements are assembled into a four-sided enclosure and largely obscured by Spanish moss. Within the structure, living ferns grow in a shallow planter. Concealment and containment intersect with ongoing processes of growth and decay.

Powers’ ephemeral, moss installation, “Understory,” will be on view throughout the ATLAS exhibition. This sculpture begins the exploration of the element “earth” and is located on the Laney lawn under the tree canopy.

Congratulations to The Fuel And Lumber Company on a beautiful presentation at the Dita (The Dita / Melissa Messina)

A glimpse at GATHERING, curated by The Fuel and Lumber Company

GATHERING is a group exhibition placing Mildred Thompson’s 1970’s Wood Pictures in context with a group of celebrated contemporary artists from across the United States. The exhibition will be presented at The Dita, a domestic space, located in the Kirkwood neighborhood near the Pullman Yards where the Atlanta Art Fair will take place.

In contrast to Thompson’s better known chromatically charged paintings, these quiet constructions hover in the space between painting and sculpture. Both abstract and quite literal, the mysterious objects are remarkable for their materiality and construction - simultaneously serious, and seriously playful. Thompson’s use of the word ‘Picture’ in this regard also points to the allusive nature of these works as suggestive of an image while not undermining the objective qualities of the work. They simply refuse to settle down neatly into any of our preconceived ideas regarding object, image, abstraction, and representation. In this work all of the either/or binaries that we tend to attach to art seem to fall apart. The artists we have assembled for this exhibition have a shared commitment to the process-based rigor of their craft and approach their chosen materials with a similar sense of exploration and sensitivity.

Laney Contemporary is pleased to feature a solo presentation of recent paintings and sculptures by Georgia-based artist Tori Tinsley at the 2026 Atlanta Art Fair. This body of work continues the journey of Tinsley’s female anti-hero through treacherous terrains and unknown perils, both external and internal. Through her expressive characters and vibrant landscapes, Tinsley strikes a delicate balance between existential anxiety and spirited resilience.

In addition to our booth, guests can experience “Low Grit Grins,” a curated project by Sarah Higgins featuring installations by Antonio Darden, Tori Tinsley, and Victoria Dugger (see additional information below).

Expanding upon the exhibition’s engagement with humor, irreverence, and pop-cultural sampling, this talk borrows the format and tone of vintage daytime talk shows. The artists will reveal their shared obsessions, discuss their work, and disclose shocking revelations about how they relate to the exhibition’s theme of humor as an entry point for challenging narratives.
