C. Jane's Pottery

C. Jane's Pottery C. Jane creates one of a kind objects, vases and functional ware. I really enjoy scratching through the slip to reveal the design.

I like the contrast between the white porcelain clay I use and the black slip I apply to the surface. I have used mostly stoneware clay and fire my work to cone 10 (2385 F) in a reduction atmosphere. I have experimented with earthenware clays which fire at lower temperatures (cone 04, oxidation) and are fired in an oxidation atmosphere. Both ways are interesting and have their own challenges. Rece

ntly I have been using mostly porcelain clay with a dark colored slip and Sgraffito decoration. Sgraffito means "scratching clay". I scratch or carve the colored slip away from the clay body, revealing the color of the clay underneath.
