Make waves with the whole family!

Join us for Making Waves Family Day at Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum on Sunday, September 13, from 1–4 PM for an afternoon of hands-on activities, creative art-making, interactive experiences, and maritime discovery!

Explore the museum in a whole new way with activities from our community partners, including Deep Center, Georgia Southern University, Tybee Island Marine Science Center, and Loop It Up Savannah. Kids and families can create, explore, learn, and discover together throughout the museum.

Before GPS, sailors crossed entire oceans using instruments like Sextants.

These 19th-century nautical tools helped navigators determine their position at sea by measuring the angle between the horizon and celestial objects like the sun and stars.

Crafted from brass with engraved silver scales, mirrors, filters, and precision optics, these instruments transformed navigation, helping mariners travel the world with remarkable accuracy.

These sextants were recovered from a ship and now are preserved as part of maritime history at Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum. Don’t miss your chance to see these sextants and many other remarkable maritime artifacts in person.

You never quite know what you’ll discover at a Ships of the Sea Family Day! 🌊

One Family Day might bring water games to the gardens. Another might introduce families to marine life, art-making, storytelling, or a completely unexpected hands-on activity. That’s part of the fun! Each event is designed to give families new ways to explore, create, learn, and make memories together.

For Making Waves Family Day on Sunday, September 13, we’re bringing even more of that discovery inside the museum. Families can explore new hands-on activities throughout the galleries, get creative, take on maritime-inspired challenges, and see Ships of the Sea in a whole new way, with even more surprises from our community partners along the way.

And since September 13 is Grandparents Day, it’s also a wonderful time for grandparents and grandchildren to spend the afternoon together, learn a little Savannah maritime history, and make a few family memories of their own.

If you’re looking for things to do in Savannah this weekend, a free family event in Savannah, or something special to do for Grandparents Day, come make waves with us!

One of the most remarkable treasures at Ships of the Sea begins with a material you might never expect to see transformed into art!

It’s called scrimshaw, and if you’ve never heard that word before, you’re not alone.

Scrimshaw is the name given to carvings and engravings traditionally made by sailors and whalers, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. On long voyages, sailors often had hours of downtime, and whale teeth and bone were materials readily available aboard whaling ships. With simple tools, they carved and engraved them with ships, animals, portraits, and reminders of home, creating everything from decorative keepsakes to useful objects.

Today, these historic pieces offer a fascinating glimpse into maritime life, craftsmanship, and the personal stories of the people who went to sea.

At Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum in Savannah, our scrimshaw collection is one of the true highlights of the museum and something you’ll want to slow down and really look at.

The ship models may draw you into the galleries, but treasures like these reveal just how much more there is to discover inside our 200-year-old mansion.

One of the most striking ship models in our mansion tells the story of a schooner that changed sailing history!

In 1851, the sleek schooner America changed maritime history when she won a famous race around the Isle of Wight, defeating some of the finest yachts in the British fleet.

Her victory was so significant that the trophy would eventually become known as the America’s Cup, launching one of the longest-running and most prestigious traditions in competitive sailing.

More than 175 years later, America’s legacy still lives on.

At Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, her story is brought to life in a particularly striking way. Our model of America was designed to resemble a framed maritime painting, complete with remarkably realistic water that makes the schooner appear to be sailing right through the scene.

The SS Savannah fountain pays tribute to the groundbreaking steamship that departed Savannah in 1819 and became the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean, a remarkable achievement connected to the vision of William Scarbrough.

For National Dog Day, we’re celebrating a few legendary sea dogs who were far more than mascots.

🐶 Sinbad | U.S. Coast Guard
A loyal shipmate who spent years at sea aboard the cutter Campbell.

🐶 Just Nuisance | Royal Navy
The only dog ever officially enlisted in the Royal Navy, known for riding trains, following sailors around town, and occasionally getting into a little trouble.

🐶 Bamse | Norwegian Navy
A beloved wartime hero remembered for his courage, loyalty, and devotion to his crew.

They crossed oceans, served alongside sailors, protected their crews, and earned their own place in maritime history.
