Something strange is stirring beneath the waves…

This Sunday, let your imagination run wild at Sunday Sea Monsters at Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum!

Join us for a 30-minute creative adventure where young artists can design and build their very own spooky, swampy sea monster using colorful collage, wild textures, and a splash of imagination.

The workshop is included with museum admission and is free for Family Members. Bring your creativity, embrace the spooky season, and come make a monster of your own!

This fall, nationally acclaimed topiary artist Michael P. Gibson will begin transforming the historic Scarbrough Garden into The Voyage, a living work of art inspired by Savannah’s enduring connection to the sea.

A special reception will be held Friday, October 23rd from 5:30 PM -7:30 PM for our GARDEN or NAVIGATOR LEVEL members to celebrate with Michael Gibson the beginning of The Voyage.

The Voyage begins here️!

Kick off the Year of the Garden with Michael P. Gibson as he completes the “first cut” in preparation for his May 2027 exhibition,
The Voyage. Ships of the Sea Garden Members are invited to meet Michael, learn about the artistry and techniques behind living sculpture, and raise a glass to the beginning of this extraordinary exhibition.

Visitors are invited to watch the work take shape Monday, October 19 through Friday, October 23 during regular museum hours. Free and open to the public, these cutting sessions offer a rare opportunity to see Gibson’s process up close and experience the exhibition as it evolves over time.

The work will unfold over the coming months before officially opening in May 2027, and we want you to be part of the journey from the very beginning! Join for the First Cut Shaping Session: October 19-23 at Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum.

Did you know bananas used to be a luxury?

When bananas made their major public debut in the United States at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, they were sold individually wrapped in tin foil for 10 cents each.

Today, bananas are one of the most familiar fruits in American kitchens, but getting them from tropical growing regions to American tables required a major evolution in maritime shipping.

The development of specialized banana boats, early refrigeration, and improved ventilation helped make it possible to transport bananas across thousands of miles while keeping them from ripening before they reached port.

From luxury to lunchbox, the story of the banana is also a story about the evolution of global maritime trade.

The Great White Fleet.

Long before refrigerated containers became part of modern shipping, transporting fresh bananas across thousands of miles of ocean required specialized ships and careful temperature control.

Chiquita, formerly known as the United Fruit Company, operated a fleet of ships known as the Great White Fleet named for their distinctive white paint, which helped reflect the tropical sun.

These ships were part of a complex system designed to move fresh fruit from tropical growing regions to markets across North America and Europe.

The history of bananas is, in many ways, a history of maritime innovation.

What stories are still waiting to be told from the sea?

Join us for the inaugural event in Tales from the Sea, a new lecture series at Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum featuring author Jonathan Bryant.

Bryant will explore his newest historical novel, The Slaver’s Apprentice, set aboard the 1819 slave ship Liberty. Through the story of a fifteen-year-old boy, the novel examines the violence, corruption, and human realities of the Atlantic slave trade before ultimately bringing the story to Savannah.

After the lecture, you can meet Bryant, purchase a copy of the book, and have it signed! See you on October 1 from 5–7:30 PM.
