We were pleased to welcome a wonderful group of 8th-grade students from New Ebenezer Retreat Center to the Andrew Low House Museum!🏛️✨

Visits like these give us the opportunity to share the story of Savannah and Georgia through the history of this remarkable 1848 home. As students explored the Andrew Low House, they discovered the people, architecture, traditions, and stories that help tell the larger story of our state and its past.

We’re grateful to for capturing the timeless beauty of Andrew Low House, as she so beautifully said, “Old places have soul.”

Some places seem to hold a story in every window, doorway, and garden. Standing in the heart of Savannah’s historic district, the house has a presence that continues to inspire visitors and photographers alike.

In 1923, Juliette Gordon Low was diagnosed with cancer. She kept her illness largely private, choosing instead to continue devoting herself to the Girl Scout movement she had founded in 1912. Even while living with increasing pain, she remained active in her work and continued to champion opportunities for girls. In 1926, less than a year before her death, she hosted the World Camp in New York, bringing Girl Scouts and Girl Guides together from around the world.

Juliette Gordon Low died in the Andrew Low House, her Savannah home on January 17, 1927, after her long struggle with breast cancer. Her legacy, however, continues to live on through the countless lives touched by the organization she created.

This October, we honor Juliette Gordon Low and all those whose lives have been affected by breast cancer. May her story continue to inspire courage, confidence, character, and hope. 🎀

The Andrew Low House is one of Savannah’s most compelling mid-19th-century residences. Built in 1848 for wealthy cotton merchant Andrew Low, the Italianate mansion was designed by New York architect John Norris, who also designed the Green Meldrim House and Mercer Williams House.

​The home hosted world-renowned figures over the decades, including English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray and Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Beyond its high-society guest list, the estate is celebrated for its architectural details, featuring cast-iron balcony railings, grand high-ceilinged parlors, and a lovely courtyard.

​Today, the Andrew Low House is maintained and operated by The Colonial Dames of America in the State of Georgia. The property offers a vivid look into the domestic life and formal entertaining of the mid 1800s. Visit them for a tour soon!
