Tower of History

Tower of History 4 viewing platforms with amazing views of the city and the St. Mary's River.
(67)

The tallest building in Sault Ste. Marie, Mi! There are four viewing platforms atop this 210 foot high concrete structure. They offer spectacular panoramic views of international proportion. Step onto the open air decks or glasses observation areas and watch the St. Mary's River and Canada unfold before you. The express elevator will take you to the top or you can choose to take all 292 steps to the top. The views are beautiful and the human eye can see up to 20 miles away. Great spot to watch the freighter make their way to the Soo Locks through the river system.

Great photo of the tower by DRE Designs!

Here's one of the Indiana Harbor as she came across the Harbor last night in front of the Tower of History

She is difficult to see here but you can see her lights all along the hull of the ship as well as her Pilothouse and the sunset in behind shows off both the ship as well as the Tower and the Church next door

The sky was truly remarkable last night and I was so glad I could stand there and not just witness it, but document it as well... so fair warning you may be seeing a lot of sunset pics from me from last night LOL!

Anyway here's the Indy last night as she heads across the harbor and starts her downbound journey to St Clair

Don't go anywhere just yet! More to come!

Check out this photo taken in 1968 at the formal dedication of the Museum Ship Valley Camp! Still time to visit the Valley Camp or Tower of History this season, we are open through October 27th, 2018.

Throwback Thursday:

The year 2018 had several anniversaries in Sault Ste. Marie: the biggest, of course, was the 350th Anniversary of the founding of the Jesuit Mission Sainte Marie du Sault. But it was also the 50th anniversary of the Poe Lock, the I-500 Snowmobile Race, and the opening of the Museum Ship VALLEY CAMP. This picture shows the formal dedication for the Museum Ship, on September 26, 1968. The ship had been retired from service in December, 1966, and was purchased from Republic Steel by Sault Historic Sites on an "as is, where is" basis for $10,000. The ship was in Superior, Wisconsin, and her last trip across Lake Superior to the Sault, in tow of the tug JOHN PURVES, was more than a little exciting, part of it being in gale force winds. Tom Manse, who later became the manager of the museum ship, said "We had no ballast or cargo, so we were riding high and catching every wind that blew. We bounced around like a cork." That interesting tidbit of the vessel's history came from "The Valley Camp Story" by Roger Le Lievre. When this picture was taken, the ship was moored at the Carbide Dock. Walter Materna Collection,

This photo and many others can be viewed on our website at www.cchsmi.com on instagram at https://www.instagram.com/cchsmi/ and are available for print at the Chippewa County Historical Society. #throwbackthursday

I visited the Tower last week while vacationing in The Soo, and I loved it! I wish there was more info about the Brutalist Architecture style though! It's truly an amazing example of this period of design. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brutalist_architecture I think that pother people like me, who are fans of art and architecture will find this piece fascinating to say the least!
