Museum staff is LOVING Fat Bear Week! 🐻 But what exactly is Fat Bear Week, and why are these bears getting so big? The Museum's Environmental Educator, Jake, explains all you need to know. πŸ‘‡

Fat Bear Week is an annual online competition created by Katmai National Park & Preserve to celebrate the brown bears of Alaska as they prepare for winter. As temperatures drop, salmon-filled streams freeze and berries become harder to find. That means it's time to EAT!!!!

From late summer through fall, the bears enter a process called hyperphagia, when they eat as much as possible to build up essential fat reserves. Those reseves help them survive the months when food is scarce while they spend winter resting in their dens. Yes, you read that right: some bears can spend up to 5 or more months in their dens!

While brown bears don't live here in New York, black bears follow a similar seasonal routine. New York's bears typically begin settling in to their dens around November, then emerge in the spring when food becomes available again.
