Dance, 2020, acrylic and urethane on canvas, 60 x 120 inches

I invite you to subscribe to my studio newsletters www.jonathanherbert.com bottom of page.

And now, let me tell you about “Dance.” It was created while veritably dancing in the studio, as I moved constantly between the palette table and the canvas. While never careless or haphazard, the paints are formulated during the act of creation and applied as the whim takes me — an expression of intuitive processes.
I have embedded a stop-motion video of part of its creation.

"Dance" measures 60 x 120 inches and was created using acrylic and urethane paint on canvas. This vibrant, abstract piece features cascades of paint. The top portion is bright, warm hues, including yellows and oranges, blending into softer pinks and reds. These colors create an undulating pattern that evokes the sense of a mountainous landscape under a glowing sunset.

The middle and lower parts of the piece are dominated by cooler shades of greens and blues, offering a contrast to the warm colors above. Vertical passages create a sense of movement and depth, flowing paint that merges seamlessly from one section to another. The interplay of colors and the fluidity of forms make the artwork dynamic and engaging.

This painting draws inspiration from the Shan Shui landscape style of 1600s Chinese paintings. Shan Shui, which translates to "mountain-water," is characterized by intricate brushwork and an emphasis on natural scenery, aiming to capture the spirit rather than the realistic representation of the landscape. Similarly, "Dance" employs an intuitive and fluid technique to evoke the essence of a landscape, where the flowing interplay of warm and cool colors hints at mountains, hills, and streams in a harmonious and abstract form.

This piece is available for purchase and can be shipped internationally. DM to inquire.
