“A Long Night at Balanced Rock”.

Back in 2016 my old man and I drove a long hour from Study Butte to hike Grapevine Hills at sunset. We set up shop waiting for the Milky Way to rise. To kill some time I thought of aiming my camera and composition to the North and try to capture Polaris and the revolution of the Earth with a long long long 45 minute exposure. Before I knew exposure stacking I would slap on an ND filter, do a little exposure math, hit the trigger and hope for the best with one single exposure. Definitely not a recommended technique these days. Nothing sucked more than an overexposed or underexposed frame. Even more so getting it right but having a plane or satellite ruin the shot. I’ve probably tried this method a half dozen times, this is my only usable image lol!!!

This image helps showcase the true purity of the night sky in . No planes, no satellites. Just you and the night sky with all the time passing by.

The journey to the river bend from which Big Bend gets its name is not for the faint of heart. Far less seen and known, River Bend Road to Mariscal Canyon is one of the most beautiful and remote drives in Texas, accessible only to white knuckle drivers with lifted clearance and hopefully a spare tire in the back.

This primitive 51mi off road traverse, stretching from Castolon to Rio Grande Village is a perfect example of what gives Big Bend its brilliance. Along with its canyons and mountains, this drive offers a true chance to get behind the wheel with a feeling of the unknown. Unnerving and adventurous. No signal to guide the way. No bathrooms or gas stops. No lights or signs. Only you, the desert, and hopefully enough in the tank to make it back. It is one of the few scenic drives in the country where one can truly feel like a wanderer.

“The Wall” is not the only threat to Big Bend National Park. River Bend Road is also a target for heavy construction, paved roads, lighting, and surveillance. Increased patrols and taxpayer funded resources all to smoothly drive past hundred foot sheer cliffs and badlands that already serve as a formidable southern border.

Please take the time to learn how to contact your representatives and support not only and , but all public lands under threat. Find ways to support the Public Lands Integrity Act, which will help keep our lands wild and safe from true predators who care more about a ballroom and a s**tty spray tan than our dark skies and mighty rivers here in Texas.

Hard to believe anyone could look at this land and feel the need to divide and destroy it. Not for security, or efficiency. But solely on ego and optics. A wall not to divide country, but to separate our moral duty to protect our wilderness, waters, and dark sky’s.

I’ve spent the last few months trying my best to avoid posting and spending time on social media. Not to avoid these issues, but to use my free time showing up in person, calling our representatives, and emailing our publications. However social media with all of its anxiety inducing time sucking I know it can be a powerful tool for bringing awareness. So I promise to stop posting and ghosting and focus on sharing more photos and stories from our beautiful Big Bend. As a photographer our biggest impact is showcasing the beauty of the world around us. Especially lands that are threatened by a weak, greedy and corrupt administration.

This attack on Big Bend is not just a wall, it’s also roads, surveillance lights and alarms. Light and noise pollution which will severely impact wildlife and the parks magnificent emptiness. Infrastructure to be built when nature already holds a strong and impressive border. Big Bend must be untouched, it’s one of America’s last wild and open National Parks.

“You wake up in Chicago, pull back the curtain and you KNOW where you are. You could be nowhere else. You are in a big, brash, muscular, broad shouldered motherf**kin’ city. A metropolis, completely non-neurotic, ever-moving, big hearted but cold blooded machine with millions of moving parts — a beast that will, if disrespected or not taken seriously, roll over you without remorse.

It is, also, as I like to point out frequently, one of America’s last great NO BU****IT zones. Pomposity, pretentiousness, putting on airs of any kind, douchery and lack of a sense of humor will not get you far in Chicago. It is a trait shared with Glasgow — another city I love with a similar working class ethos and history. But those looking for a “Chicago Show” on this week’s PARTS UNKNOWN will likely be disappointed. There are no Italian beef scenes, no hot dogs, no Chicago blues, and there sure as s**t ain’t no deep dish pizza. We’ve done all those things — on those other shows. And we might well do them again someday.

I like Chicago. So, any excuse to come back, for me, is a good one.” -
