Ellsworth Gallery regrets to announce the postponement of our new exhibition Manifest Destiny's Child featuring works by artist Chaz John. With the state-wide shut down, we believed we would still be able to hang the show, and hold a virtual reception with us recording a live video inside the gallery. Yet, upon further notice from state health officials and the Santa Fe police department, we have been advised to respect the new mandate and limit personnel inside our doors 100% or face a steep fine.

We apologize for not recognizing this sooner and giving you all the expectation we would still be able to pull this off under the current restrictions. We plan on going forward with opening the exhibit when the shutdown has ceased, whether that be November 30th or after if extended. Stay tuned for a revised opening reception date.

Until then, keep your eye out for more information and pieces of content related to the exhibition. There are exciting things in the works, along with a special video profile that we can't wait to share with you all.

Stay safe!

🚨🚨🚨 (IMPORTANT UPDATE BELOW) ⬇️⬇️

Due to the new state-mandated shutdown issued by Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham, Ellsworth Gallery is moving our highly anticipated opening reception for our new exhibition Manifest Destiny's Child online. The reception will now take place Saturday, November 21 instead of Friday, November 20. The event will take place from 3-4 PM. (Again this Saturday, the 21st)

We are exited to host the reception on Zoom and Instagram with artist Chaz John as he walks us through the exhibition, giving you an intimate look into the work and the ideas behind the pieces. As it is always important to us to give our audience a way to communicate with the artist, John will be available for comments and questions which you will be able to ask via Zoom and Instagram chat.

Head to our website for the zoom link or attend here via Instagram.

Once we are allowed to do so, we will open back our doors during regular business hours, giving you the opportunity to see this incredible exhibition first-hand. Until then, we hope you join us virtually, for what we expect to be a fascinating event.

Following the reception we will be available by appointment.

👏👏👏

“Colombian Exposition 1893,” 2020. Acrylic House Paint on Canvas.

Inspired by the world’s fair held in Chicago in 1893 which celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival into the “ new world” this dazzling @chaz.john.art painting will be up and ready to view in less than 2 weeks, along with the rest of the “Manifest Destiny’s Child” exhibition!

This centerpiece painting perfectly encapsulates the layers of historical trauma, absurdity, symbolism, and yes, even humor that are spread across this whole body of work.

We are thrilled we get to share it all with you so soon!

To attend the special opening reception (with the artist present) head over to our website to book a slot. Otherwise after November 20th we will be open for regular business hours Saturdays and Sundays for the remainder of the show. We’ll see you soon!

“Hawk With an Arrow in it (Apollo),” 2020. Acrylic on Canvas. Chaz John

This is one of the first works @chaz.john.art showed us for his new show “Manifest Destiny’s Child” and we immediately knew this show was going to be BIG. All of us are lucky that there are only a few more weeks before we get to see it in full.

Reserve a spot for the opening reception (11/20/20) over at our website to be one of the limited people who will get to attend (per Governor’s orders).

Ellsworth Gallery is thrilled to announce our next exhibition “Manifest Destiny’s Child,” by artist Chaz John!!! (@chaz.john.art )

I know we have been quiet as of late but this show is well worth the wait.

Join us for the opening reception on November 20, 2020. To attend, book by appointment over at our website (link in bio).

In Manifest Destiny’s Child, Chaz John uses a vibrant collection of images both real and imagined to explore the modern myth of the American frontier. The result is a poetic narrative of cultural iconography, raw dream images, and a personal quilt of archetypal patterns that make up the collective American psyche.

Largely conceived and created during the time of Covid-19, the paintings in the exhibition are composed of house paint, as art stores had their doors closed while Sherwin-Williams kept theirs open. Colors and shapes plop, droop, and slump in a mystifying fashion, while tones vary between the rouse of a carnival and the gloom of a nightmare. Other works include found object sculptures and drawings on construction paper.

“I want the paintings and sculptures to look like they’re trying to remember a dream; falling apart and coming together; That’s really it…and although like a dream the relationship between the subject and narrative isn’t always apparent, the work evokes complex emotional depth, humor and an aura of mystery that invites the viewer to embrace a collection of humanity’s archetypal narratives that continue to live in us. “-Chaz John

Keep your eye out for more info and work from the show to come

“Lungs for Light,” 2020

This massive painting (5 x 10 feet) is a personal favorite of current @_gregballenger_ show “THE HAZY WORLD // ŁID BICHAHAŁEEŁ”

Climate change and decades of environmental pollution on native Navajo land is central to this incredible exhibition. Yes, these paintings are beautiful, light in palette, and pleasant to look at-but under the surface there are difficult, unnerving yet important images and musings for us all to consider and sit with.

Those lungs though 😱

Last week we added this lovely painting to Greg Ballenger’s exhibit “THE HAZY WORLD // ŁID BICHAHAŁEEŁ”

Titled “Ouroboros,” 2020, Ballenger took the ancient symbol of a snake eating its own tail and re-worked it into the cyclical narrative of ants leaving and returning home in search of sustenance.

Ballenger states “These days, I find myself looking at the non-human beings around me and listening to what lessons they have to share. In the midst of our cycles, may we learn to be as consistently resilient as the ants around us that work together, every day, for the well-being of their colony/community.”

Come by and check it out!!’

We are just one day away from our re-opening! Come join us tomorrow from 2-6PM, 10AM-6PM Saturday, and 10AM-2PM Sunday!

Greg Ballenger's extraordinary exhibit "The Hazy World // ŁID BICHAHAŁEEŁ" is on display, along with works by Doug Coffin and our extensive antique Samurai Collection.

Note: We are required by law to ask every visitor to enter wearing a mask and to observe social distancing.

Thanks, see you this weekend!

☺️

Ellsworth Gallery is thrilled to announce its re-opening! Starting July 3rd join us at 215 E Palace Ave Santa Fe, NM during our new modified hours.

FRIDAY: 2-6PM
SATURDAY: 10AM-6PM
SUNDAY: 10AM-2PM

Come by to see Greg Ballenger's extraordinary exhibition The Hazy World // Łid Bichahałeeł which we originally opened in March shortly before we unfortunately had to close due to COVID-19.

In this show Ballenger explores his indigenous ancestry by turning towards the singular architecture of the Navajo reservations he grew up close to in Gallup, NM. In awe of the ingenuity and persistence of these structures, these paintings commemorate the survival of this community as climate change and an encroaching industrialization continue to threaten their land.

Along with The Hazy World // Łid Bichahałeeł, our Samurai antiques collection and Doug Coffin's show Full Circle will continue to be on view. For health safety precautions, we will close off the rear hallway and gallery, along with the upstairs. We are required by law to ask ever visitor to wear a mask and observe social distancing to keep our staff and community safe.

We can't wait to have our doors back open, we hope to see you there!

Wonderful space. In particular I enjoyed the Chaz John, artist in residence, exhibit. Of course, his talent and appreciation for the profound nuances of dogs expressions in his "Rez Dogs" series speak for themselves. However, it was particularly enlightening to hear from Chaz. I was tickled to see the paintings were hung low..FOR THE DOGS TO SEE!!😂 Really great. Merci to the Gallery and to Chaz for bringing the Rez Dogs to us. Please don't forget to stop in the back room and see the powerful painting Chaz did of a woman and her daughter. That's all I will say. Go see.
