Today we honor the memory and creative legacy of Los Cinco Pintores member Will Shuster (whose self-portrait we see here). As the creator and founder of Santa Fe’s iconic “Burning of Zozobra,” Shuster’s incredible artistic and cultural creation leaves our city enriched and endlessly unique.
Zozobra burns tonight, and alongside him, all gloom collectively accumulated by Santa Feans this past year goes up in flames. Cheers to that!

We’ve been so lucky this summer to have a robust monsoon season here in Santa Fe. Most afternoons, our landscape is framed by brooding, heavy clouds- just like those portrayed in “West Side of the Gorge” by John Moyers. That combination of heavy clouds against blue sky, yellow sunlit foreground against mountains in shadow brings the Taos landscape to the viewer in a palpable, beautifully evocative way.

Can you hear him sing?

Allan Houser is best known for his evocative, modern, and minimalistic sculptural depictions of Native subjects. His “Lead Singer” displays all of these artist hallmarks, and does so through a beautiful use of negative space. In the Singer’s expertly rendered contours, viewers experience the beat of his rattle, the musicality of his voice, and, ultimately, are shown an evocation of one art form- music- via the art form of sculpture.

Nedra Matteucci Galleries is thrilled to showcase this Raymond Jonson artwork from 1969 entitled Polymer #5. This bold work features flattened geometric polymer shapes set against a delicately rendered sprayed
background. The contrast of these hard, jewel-toned figures against a
gently fading, neutral background creates a striking impression. Artist (and Transcendental Painting Group cohort) Ed Garman summarized his friend Jonson's work thus: “The paintings themselves have a singing quality about them, a subtle sound, a pitch, a tonal mood that is characteristic even in the most brilliant contrasts, the strongest arrangements of line and shape,
space and mass…there is a peace-giving serenity that is musically on rest.”
