Somewhere Over The Rainbow

Dear Good Folk,

You have made our dreams come true! We have recently bought a house in
town. As many of you know we lived out in the country, previously. We
sure did love it out there, in the land of vistas. We did not love the
35/40 minute commute each way, to get our daughter to school everyday.
We have been looking for many years and we found our dream house. We
could have not done this without your support! You have supported our
family of three, and 20 folk artists from Oaxaca Mexico, and Northern
New Mexico. Supporting folk ways is in dire need, as less and less
artists emerge in the genre. We are so honored to continue this
support of artist families.

Holiday newsletter and website update

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, the wooden owls were sitting next to the wooden mouse. The tiny snakes were hung at the chimney with care, with hopes that more folk art would soon be there. The "Big Kid" was nestled all snug in her bed, while visions of farolitos danced in her head. And Mama with her book pile, and Pa with a weight training snack, had just gotten to work on presents to wrap. When out on the portal there arose such a clatter, we turned off British Baking to see what was the matter. When what to my wondering eyes did arrive, but thousands of wood carvings, all of them alive. They told us they needed new houses to thrive, from LA to NYC they wished us to send them- and begged us that collectors like you could befriend them. So we humbly ask you to look at our new site, happy folk art to all and to all a good night!

Dear Good Folks,

We are happy to present a holiday show by local artist Autry Macias, Friday, Dec. 2nd, 4:30-7pm.

Known for her excellent drawing and painting ability, Autry has transitioned her graphic style into punched tin holiday ornaments.
Solstice Spells and Yule Monsters is a collection of punched tin ornaments to adorn walls and holiday trees, featuring creatures out of Eastern and Central European folklore, and elements of ancient earth magic. These ornaments highlight the juxtaposition of light vs dark/ naughty and nice while exploring the pagan origins of modern holiday traditions, and the spirit (and Spirits) of those holidays.

Come see these incredibly unique holiday gifts Friday, Dec 2nd, 4:30-7pm.

On our website (https://www.goodfolknm.com) we have a new, exclusive content not found in store. We are in a new phase of expanding our business and supporting more artists, collectors, and folk art communities.

Peace on Earth, Goodwill towards all Beings everywhere!

Dear Good Folks,

We sure do appreciate you keeping us in business through the pandemic, what a couple of years it has been! We are so lucky in this life, to share in folk art friendships with artists and collectors all over the world. Our friendships with new artists continue to develop as we are now supporting artists from Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Nigeria, beginning this last year. Our local artists have been very busy, as we have had such a strong support for items made in New Mexico. Oaxaca is our second home, Thais has been there every year of her life since she was 4 months old. To say we have missed our artists, friends, and family in Mexico would be the understatement of the last two years. Although we cannot be with our kin in Oaxaca, we have been able to keep our artists fully supported during this time. Early in the pandemic one of our young artists, Alejandro Jimenez (Great Grandson to the famed Manuel Jimenez), helped us to arrange orders and shipping from Oaxaca. We have been so fortunate to keep our orders with these artists filled.

Everyday when we open up shop, look at our animal menagerie, and prepare to invite guests into our fun house, we are reminded of how vital the work of our artists is. Folk Art is a tradition that is Universal, that exists beyond a market, because it tells us stories about who people are, how they live, and what they value. It is an invaluable form of expression that deserves all of our support as gallery owners and collectors ourselves. We truly believe there is magic in it. And to get to work surrounded by magic each day is an unparalleled gift. Thank you for your support!

We have a new website with exclusive content not found in store. We are in a new phase of expanding our business and supporting more artists, collectors, and folk art communities. Our site is the way in which we plan to expand. During the lockdown, our website supported us enough to put food on the table, and keep our artists paid. We also love staying connected to our customers through the site, since travel has been a challenge for many.

Our wonderful daughter Ember is three years old, and for the first time is in the full spirit of Christmas. Her beautiful way of seeing the world, and connecting to each moment, continues to amaze us. We look forward to her vaccination this spring, so that many of you can finally meet her and get to know her. Not being able to share such a precious gift with the world is a heartbreaker. We feel so lucky that we have been surrounded by her love and silliness during this tumultuous era. Being with her makes life a present everyday.

If you have questions on any pieces on the site, please email us or call! We are happy to fulfill any orders for holidays and make sure to pack things so that gifts go undetected. We are told that December 15th is the last day to ship items before Christmas, so please get your orders in by the 15th.

Peace on Earth, Goodwill towards all Beings everywhere!

Todd, Thais, and Ember.

Western Blue at Form and Concept (https://www.formandconcept.center/events/58/)

Dear Friends,

I have been working towards a solo show for three years now. My show Western Blue opens on Friday, August the 13th, from 5-7 and is open through November 20th, at Form and Concept gallery. I worked with an incredible artist Amy Westphal, and my darling husband Todd White, to create a monumental Western Bluebird lantern, an homage to the brilliant creatures that got me through the year of Covid-19. Other featured works include sculptural holograms, candles cast from my hands and arms, detailed drawings made of thousands of microscopic dots, and watercolor paintings.

I am not certain what the future holds for me, in regards to my art career. I want to be more intentional about what I desire to make, and how I share my work. One factor that I can no longer personally ignore, is climate change. It is something I think about much of the day, in relation to my three year old daughter. I feel that as someone with many privileges, if I do not make drastic changes, I am preventing my child from a future on this planet. I do feel that this is unforgivable, as Greta Thunberg so powerfully reminds us.

I expect that my way of making, or even my livelihood may drastically shift after this show. I am going to take time and be much more thoughtful in how I proceed. I also need more time with my daughter, to be fully present in her life.

All this is to say, I hope you can make it to my opening. I would love to see you, celebrate making it through this difficult last few years, and celebrate the friendship we share. The show is a thank you to being here, to having our senses, seeing the beauty of our world each day- and to the relationships we share through the language of art making throughout history. Here is my statement for the show.

Western Blue
Ever deeper, never done
You become the morning sun
For those we hold, and those away
I’ll never waste another day
When the evening moon has fledged
You become the world at edge
Both the spirit and the sky
The veiled surface- singing neigh

When she left I did not mourn
Because she rose at every
dawn
And looked a baby in the eyes
Whose colors spread across the skies
Ever deeper, never done
I’ll find you in a morning song
And greet you as the summer moon
Omnipresent western blue

Be well and thank you for your continued support.

Thais Mather

(Good Folk's web store will be down until mid-October. At which time we will relaunch with all new inventory. Thanks for your patience.)

Spring Blooms in New Mexico

Dear Good Folk Community,

Spring has sprung and Santa Fe is gorgeous! The birds are going mad with family planning- and the plants are bursting with color. Hope springs eternal, as we all start gathering with family and friends- and imagining the not so far future in which we can be fully human again. Our little spring chick is a busy bee; Ember (two and a half) has started school and is learning all about being a kid with other kids again. It is a beautiful sight to behold!

Speaking of beauty, we have a new shipment of work from Armando and Antonia Jimenez, from Oaxaca. It is STUNNING new work, we kept a few pieces but honestly wanted most of them for ourselves. The cheetah is unreal, as is the coati-- a new work from this family. You can’t go wrong with that owl or the pigs either.

Paul Lutonsky of Corrales, New Mexico has also been busy- we have many new owls.

Please let us know how we can help you collect one of these amazing new works, we do payment plans and can find a way to make it work for you!

Best,

Thais, Todd, and Ember!
