We would like to share a few images of our design for the new Georgia O’Keeffe Museum. The building is designed to be an identifiable harmonious addition to the fabric of downtown Santa Fe. It will be a building that pays homage to the life, aesthetics, and sensibilities of one of the great artists of our time. Miss O’Keefe made New Mexico her home and through her work we have a heightened appreciation of form, color, sky, landscape, place, and presence.
This building is also about authenticity and the relationship of material tectonics to style. The exterior structure of this building will be built primarily using adobe mud bricks. Miss O’Keeffe would have settled for nothing less. This building is a reflection of our love for vernacular adobe architecture, and for the culture and landscape of New Mexico, and for Santa Fe that is our home.
On Tuesday, January 9th, at 5:30pm Santa Fe Historic Districts Review Board (HDRB) will be reviewing the design for this project in the City Council Chambers. Please come!
The conversation around the nature of what is considered to be style, the nature of authenticity, and the sense of place is important, and we would love to hear your thoughts.
If nothing else please come to support our efforts to build a cultural landmark in adobe - the humblest and most carbon neutral of all materials - that people globally associate with Santa Fe, but has now stylistically been replaced by hollow framing, fake vigas, and a veneer of brown stucco skin.
