Shidoni Gallery

Shidoni Gallery Shidoni is Santa Fe's oldest art gallery under the same family ownership.New works almost constantly. If you haven't visited in a while, come see what's new this week.

Shidoni Bronze Gallery and Sculpture Gardens SHIDONI BRONZE is the original gallery located at the entrance to the 14,000 square foot foundry complex. The Bronze Gallery officially opened in 1975, a year which also marked the First Annual Outdoor Sculpture Show. With its large wood beam construction and brick floors, a beautiful enclosed patio area and covered portal visitors are invited to browse among the largest selection of sculpture to be found in the Southwest. The variety of styles is unequaled, encompassing abstract, non-objective, realism, functional, kinetic, found object and fountains. Its warm and friendly atmosphere encourages guests to relax, ask questions and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We offer the viewer the extraordinary experience of seeing works of art bathed in the famous light of northern New Mexico. Works representing over 100 local and nationally known artists, are available for purchase and priced for every budget. Commissioned work is also available if you don't see what you like yet. In addition, sculpting tools, clay, wax, armatures, mold materials, patina supplies and other sculpture supplies are available for sale. Shidoni Arts Gallery SHIDONI ARTS is a gallery of textures and colors: wood, metal, clay, glass, stone, paint, canvas, paper, resin and fiber. These and other materials are carved, turned, bent, painted, fired, hammered or thrown into wonderful objects that challenge the eye and dazzle the imagination. The mix is rich, eclectic, joyful and profound. Visiting our spacious premises is a sensory experience: a blacksmith’s gate, or a woodworker’s cabinet interacts with an exquisite blown glass vase, or a photographer’s digital print. Shidoni Arts is a unique environment equally suited to the seasoned or the novice collector. We cordially invite you come and see for yourself the truly unique and special place that is Shidoni Gallery.

After 46 years of helping many talented artists create their works in bronze, we have made the difficult decision to close the Foundry operations at Shidoni.

We want to thank those of you who took advantage of our combined foundry/gallery operations to witness how many of the bronzes you’ve seen at Shidoni were actually made, then to appreciate them even more in their finished state in the Galleries and Sculpture gardens.

The good news is that our beautiful Gardens and Galleries will remain open and overflowing with amazing artistic works. We’d love to see you and your guests come and enjoy the ever changing new works at the Gallery.

Donovan Yazzie (Navajo Name “Dinẻ”)

His work is a reflection of the traditional Navajo Beauty Way teachings passed down to him by his parents, who have been medicine people for over 70 years.

You will find references to the duality of life in all his pieces – particularly the balance of male and female forces, which are different but complimentary like light and dark, black and white, morning and evening. He believes they are necessary for the creation of new life on this earth plane and for balanced growth and renewal. Always supporting this dance are the spiritual forces of Mother Earth, which are alive and always changing.

He is constantly experimenting with new methods and techniques for using metal; a strong, enduring, but also living substance, to bring the teachings to light.

His work is created in low-carbon steel, with paint and clear lacquer applied where necessary to bring the piece to life and introduce the subtleties of the teachings.

The lacquer also seals the piece to minimize oxidation. Each piece is unique and has been blessed to bring inspiration and balancing energy into your home.

03/03/2017

Jose Varela is a self-taught artist, specializing in steel sculptures and architectural designs. Migrating to America from Mexico in 2000, he started his own business of creating beautiful, original, artistic gates in 2007. His original style, use of patinas, and steel materials set his work apart from the “norm”, as each custom designed gate adds value and wonder to your home. Specializing in customization, he can fit any size space with a piece of functional art, as his sculptures range from a mere 24 inch tall simple cross, to a 25-foot entwined bodies, reaching for the heavens, covered in gold leaf. Believing a beautiful home deserves a beautiful gate and entrance way, his specialty has expanded to include 20-foot+ gates, side pillars, walking gates, as well as fences if needed for your space.

All of the wood is framed in steel which not only adds character to the piece but will hold up well to the various types of Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico weather - Regular wooden doors barely last 10 years, but with a steel frame, they can last forever. Included with these works are; chemically processed patinas to create unique and beautiful colors that add life to the work, the highest quality clear coat available to protect against the natural elements, industrial strength hinges and steel screens on all security doors, a complete structural design adding privacy to your home up to ¼” to absolutely no gaps, and a 10-year warranty on the structure of all custom gates.

Striving to go the distance for his clients, artistically as well as in miles, though he is based in Los Lunas he serves clients all over New Mexico and is willing to travel out-of-state if necessary.

Come to Shidoni to see the works available and ready to install into your home today, or call to request a quote or discuss options for your very own custom designed Jose Varela Gate at 505.988.8001.

Check out stunning new steel works by John Ellis throughout our Sculpture Gardens, Bronze Gallery, and Online Artist Gallery.

( For John, Fabricating stainless steel sculpture has combined his thoughts, feelings, and skills into a form of expression that he whole heartedly enjoys. This process of self-discovery combined with the slow process of making his pieces has given him a chance to channel and project what he feels and believes. Though his work is contemporary, the inspiration for his pieces and the symbols used to form them, are very old. In a world of fast-paced everything, perhaps a look back into the basics of human expression would give us a chance to think anew. It is with that hope that John shares his work with us, having turned his creative process into a form of meditation on life.)

We hope you're all prepared for an exciting Halloween Weekend!
You'll be entranced by the fall foliage and beautiful sculpture in our gardens.
In the spirit of Halloween, please take a look at Ramon Valdez's beautifully crafted wooden table, "Morticia." Featuring a spiderweb inlay and Black Widow.

Ramon Valdez's - "Morticia" - African Wenge, Ebony, Chakte-kok, and American Holly wood - Featured at Shidoni Gallery.

( Ramon, another one of our favorite New Mexican artists, began crafting Fine Furniture in 1998 to pursue his lifelong dream of creating unique furniture of the highest quality. His future heirlooms are created utilizing beautiful exotic and domestic species of wood from all around the world. His practice of a technique called Marquetry uses no paint, stain, or dye to produce these variations in wood color and texture. Instead, his beautiful motifs are created by utilizing different species of wood inlays to achieve uniquely intricate designs. Ramon's countless artistic accolades include apprenticeships, awards, and showings that have helped develop his career and passion to create. Having a distinctly humble bond and immense respect for nature, Ramon understands that he is merely rearranging the beauty that Mother Nature has already provided, believing that the tools he uses are the means by which he leaves a trace of his spirit. )
