Today we’re taking a closer look at Leticia Herrera’s painting series titled Walkers. Herrera’s walkers are three-dimensional, impasto figures made from thickly applied oil paint, and if you look closely Herrera includes painted shadows beneath the figures that follow the lighting within the piece! The longer we look at them the more personality the little figures seem to have. As the walkers travel together across plains of color and into the light, Herrera explores themes of kindness, joy, creativity, purpose, migration and freedom with the viewer. To learn more, please visit our website (link in bio), and check out Herrera’s new inventory at our Santa Fe location (sneak peek in slides 7-9)!

Eustaquio Segrelles's masterful paintings transcend time and tradition, combining elements of chiaroscuro and naturalism. His ability to manipulate light, shadow and color, with the use of only natural colors is truly unparalleled. Segrelles is also known for his loose and expressive brush strokes (akin to Sorolla), creating a sense of the fleeting moment that is forever captured in his paintings. Today we would like to introduce you to Brad Forsythe, a local Houston artist who has recently joined Thornwood Gallery!
Forsythe has led an extremely entrepreneurial and innovative life, pioneering internet-based media advertisement, co-hosting The Advertising Show podcast, and much more before fully dedicating himself to the fine arts in 2008. Surrealism has come in many shapes and sizes since the movement’s inception in Post World War I Europe. Across media, artists aimed to allow the unconscious mind to express itself, often resulting in the depiction of illogical or dreamlike scenes and ideas. Inspired by Rene Magritte, Max Ernst, and Salvador Dali, Jose Antonio Fuentes uses Surrealism as a foundation to his practice where he assembles different photos and perspectives before painting the arranged image with Realist precision. His cloudscapes capture our imaginations and remind us of wondrous times trying to find different forms as they travel across the sky. Today we’re thinking about the vast and intriguing language of Carlos Gamez de Francisco’s flower paintings. These beautiful, delicately crafted petals are set in embellished, golden circle frames that catch the light as well as the viewer's eye. While some of us may know that tulips classically represent deep and true love, Carlos also includes insects in his paintings that symbolize freedom when flying, chaos when falling, and balance when lying down. These little paintings are as insightful as they are stunning, and if you want to know more, please visit www.thornwoodgallery.com.

In the words of Marcel Demagny, “as an architect I am a conductor, and as a painter, I am a soloist.” We love how Demagny seems to sculpt paint on the canvas through his use of palette knives and spatulas, focusing his attention on color, angles, and mass. The resulting landscapes are equally graphic and vibrant, capturing attention in any room. To learn more please visit www.thornwoodgallery.com.

Today we wanted to share a bit more about Matt Kaplinsky, a self-taught painter who has been honing his craft since 1991. His art practice evolved from eggshell and metal sculptures, to abstract art gracing the walls of coffee shops, hair salons, and consignment stores, to the iconic still life paintings we are showcasing today. Kaplinsky finds inspiration in dramatic elements of architecture and geography whenever he travels outside of the familiar territory of his native North Texas. This translates to his ability to balance geometric patterns with organic arrangements of plants and animals, capturing the eye of the beholder. Please visit www.thornwoodgallery.com for more information on Matt Kaplinsky’s work.

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius, and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”
―Marilyn Monroe

Amy Shekhter’s admiration for influential women and love of fashion are constant inspirations for her work. She creates a playful spin on contemporary culture using prominent branding, bold colors, and layers of added texture. Amy’s pop art not only introduces younger generations to important historic icons, such as Marilyn Monroe, but also touches on materialism and values of today’s society. To learn more about Shekhter’s work, please visit www.thornwoodgallery.com.

A closer look at Bassmi Ibrahim’s (1941-2019) Isness 158 (60x48,” mixed media on canvas), and how we’re imagining it in your space on slide two!

Ibrahim created work alongside other ABEX and color field painters in NYC before he relocated to Florida. We’re thinking a lot about how he painted within the expected technique of the artists from that generation, but also especially where his technique veers away from those peers, and how his change in location may have some influence in this shift. We’re also just appreciating them as the treat that they are! Isness 158 speaks to the fluidity and dynamic nature of all of his works.

Our Houston gallery’s install of a few of the new Bassmi Ibrahim (1941-2019) works that just arrived! We’re loving Ibrahim’s veils of active color, and are excited to ponder over the ways that the artist both stayed true to and strayed away from typical color field techniques. Here, we paired them next to Leticia Herrera’s impasto Light of Life (oil on canvas) and Bob Ichter’s Red Shift (acrylic on plexiglass) to suggest the wide breadth of abstract painting’s manifestations.

All Ibrahim works are here are mixed media on canvas, and from left to right we have:

Thornwood Gallery is representing two new artists, Edward Rittenberg and Javier Pedrosa! Rittenberg specializes in floral scenes with a low relief, sculptural quality (Slide 1, Lavender Oasis), while Pedrosa depicts hyper-realistic peaceful moments from everyday life (Slide 2, Atardecer en Estacion). We’re excited to have the addition of the both of them, especially as they embody the wide range of the painting genre, and we welcome them to our space!
