A full house for our May 16 curator talk on Lucid Perturbations with gallery director Carina Evangelista and artist Pamela Matsuda-Dunn, longtime friend of China Marks. Together, they guided visitors through Marks’s sewn multiverse of allegory, dark humor, and wit—sharing stories of the artist’s life, practice, and the singular vision behind more than 600 sewn tableaux created over two decades.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special conversation and for spending the afternoon immersed in the extraordinary world of China Marks.

Zane Bennett Contemporary Art is pleased to present "Hav-a-Tampa 12” by Sam Gilliam (1933–2022), a pioneering figure in postwar American abstraction.

Featuring individually printed and stitched together panels, this print represents Gilliam's boundary-pushing creative practice that moves fluidly between mediums, embracing color, texture, and form in dynamic ways. Swipe to the end for photos taken during the publishing of “Hav-a-Tampa 12."

“My heart is an impossible machine.”

In her sewn books, Marks stitches fragments of language into quietly powerful stories. On each page, medium and process merge into something both poetic and tactile.

Experience Marks’s sewn books in "Lucid Perturbations," on view through 11 July 2026.

Director Carina Evangelista on China Marks’s "Generations" ✨

In this work, two figures face one another: an older woman, poised and adorned with a flamboyant headpiece, and a younger woman in quiet resistance.

“Someday all of this will be yours,” the elder offers.
“What if I don’t want it?” the younger replies.

Above them, Marks writes: “The generations are like sovereign nations, each speaking a private language and worshiping a different god, complicating relations.”

Through wit and poignancy, Marks captures a deeply contemporary tension, questions of inheritance, responsibility, and the future of the planet. And yet, as Carina reminds us, they are still in conversation. That, in itself, is hope.

On view through July 11, 2026. Stop in to experience Lucid Perturbations.
