Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art

Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art Cultivating physical, critical, and spiritual engagement with the visual arts. The first Westmont Art Center, including Reynolds Gallery, was dedicated in 1985.

Courses in visual art have been offered at Westmont almost since its creation, but the Art Department was created in 1986. Both the gallery program and the academic department were located in a restored building that was originally a dorm for the Deane School for Boys in the early 20th century. In 2010, the program moved to a new state-of-the-art facility in the center of Westmont’s campus, the Ad

ams Center for the Visual Arts, and the exhibition program took on the new identity of the Westmont Museum of Art. After a gift of work from Lady Leslie Ridley-Tree, the museum took on the name the Westmont Ridley-Tree Museum of Art as an act of gratitude for her support and generosity.

Through this series of relief prints, Diego Castañeda tells his family story and pays tribute to his Norwegian and Peruvian heritage. When describing the purpose of his series, Diego says that “At a time when conversations of immigration and family roots lead people to question the good that foreigners can do in their surrounding community, this work seeks to offer a response.”

These prints bring light and attention to the beauty and hard work in the overlooked, whether that be in his medium or in his community. The four large, hand-carved relief prints communicate to the viewer how the Light within us can abound from our heritage, namesake, homespace, and through generations.

Visit the muesum to see Diego’s prints up close in “Reencounter,” open until May 9.

Open Monday-Friday 10am-4pm and
Saturdays 11am-5pm.

Marco Valdez’s series of charcoal drawings are unified by the presence of the colors belonging to Valdez’s family crest, white and blue. He describes these colors as deeply tied to his identity. He dedicates these works to his parents and grandparents, who crossed borders and moved mountains to create the life he now lives.

Within these drawings his reflection on the transformations he has experienced throughout his life are vastly apparent. He describes the drawings as some of the most personal pieces he has ever created, deeply rooted in his heritage and memory.

Visit the muesum to see more of these deeply personal works by the senior class on view until May 9 in “Reencounter.”

Open Monday-Friday 10am-4pm and Saturdays 11am-5pm.

EMBER TREES 🌲

Join us tomorrow at 6pm for this free & public one-night only outdoor installation by Ethan Turpin and Jonathan PJ Smith. Featuring a grove of pine trees on the Westmont campus burned in the 2008 Tea Fire, Turpin and Smith will map projections of glowing embers onto the trees — creating the illusion that a fire has just passed through.

The installation event will include a special composition commissioned by the Museum for Ember Trees by Daniel Gee, Westmont Assistant Professor of Music, and performed by the student string quartet. 🎻

Professor Emeritus Paul Willis will read two poems, and two local firefighters will share personal stories of fire and hope.

Swipe for the event program and a map of the event location. Parking on campus is free; call the Museum at 805-565-6162 with inquiries.
