B-Minus Studios is a collaborative artist work space located in the historic Santora Arts Building in downtown Santa Ana. The studio serves a dual function as both an exhibition space and artists’ studio. By bridging the gap between where art is created and where it is displayed, B-Minus offers the public a unique way to engage with art outside the traditional gallery model. Visitors are invited to not only view finished work, but to also meet with the artists in their personal workspace.

"My name is Monica Gava and I am the Illustrator and Impressionist Abstract artist at Koketi Studio. I am from Brazil and my art is heavily influenced by the vibrant brazilian culture, and its happy people.

Nature has always been an escape and a source of inspiration for me. Traveling feeds my thirst for diversity and wonder. So when I paint, I hope you can cross the oceans with me, and make meaningful connections through my brush strokes and the touch of my hands."

Christopher Maldonado is an emerging filmmaker/photographer from San Antonio, TX. He began a serious practice of photography during his freshman year at University of Texas at Austin, where he primarily focused on architecture and street photography- “the easiest subjects to photograph when you’re right in the middle of Austin,” Maldonado says, “I soon fell in love with the process of film photography and eventually acquired multiple cameras and a film scanner much to the disappointment of my wallet.”

Maldonado currently works in Los Angeles at Peter Berg’s documentary company Film 45 and writes feature scripts in his free time, to direct in the future.

16 Photos from 2021:

I’m a big fan of westerns and have always been fascinated by the push/pull of man and nature. I visited Yellowstone National Park in the summer of 2021 and was interested in the way people interact with nature nowadays as a vacation destination, and how we consolidate that into our day-to-day lives.

The photos were taken on a Canon AE-1 Program, Nikon L35AF, and iPhone XS.

David Solis Jr is a filmmaker, music producer, and artist from San Antonio, TX.
From a young age he had a passion for artistic expression. Solis relocated to California to pursue the development of his creative skills and to find opportunities to create. His work is largely influenced by his background as a Tejano, as well as his faith. Solis creates work that depicts human nature and the realities of life with honesty, without being reductive.

He is currently developing screenplays for short films, a tv pilot, and a feature, and eagerly applies himself for any opportunity to create and share the world as he sees it.

Goliad (2021) aprox. 11 min.:

Goliad is a short film that serves as a companion piece to his album of the same name. It is composed of three tracks from that album that tell a condensed version of the album’s story of self-actualization. The film has a focus on visual storytelling, relying on music, editing, and cinematography to dance with the protagonist and share its ideas nonverbally.

The film stars Houston-based dancer Hailey Summers as the titular Goliad, in an interpretive dance, experiencing birth to adulthood as she experiments with her personality, struggles with confusion and self-doubt, and resolves to incorporate her shadow and become the fullest version of herself.

The tracks used are:

1. This Is The Escape (ft. Joseph De La O)
2. (I Just Get) More Attached to You
3. Goliath/Perdition

Art Walk is next Saturday!

Matteo Di Ventra:
This show is a paper trail of Matteo's life painting studies, including friends, students, and his best friend & wife. Many of these paintings were created during classes that he taught and life painting sessions that he attended at Kline Academy. Di Ventra crafted some the works meticulously from multiple life sessions, while others are more rudimentary. The range in level of realization intentionally depicts stages of the artist's process and technique. Due to the multitude of hours spent teaching the craft of oil painting, Di Ventra also enjoys the abstract and more expressive elements within representational painting. He finds that many of these exciting decisions made on the fly during a life session can be lost when too much time is spent on rendering details.

Guest artist Shannon Vaught will be displaying an array of portraits June 4th 6-10p at BMinus:

Familiar Faces is a series of recent paintings by Southern California based artist Shannon Vaught. These spontaneous Alla Prima portraits depict friends of the artist, and are an energetic response to their unique characteristics. While exploring individuality in each singular painting, the sheer quantity of same-sized portraits unifies them, focusing on a greater connectedness, and what is most innately human.
—————————————————————
Born in 1996 just outside of Detroit, Shannon Vaught is a contemporary realist painter with emphasis on the human figure and portrait. Shannon fell in love with painting in oils the first time she was introduced to the medium at the Laguna College of Art and Design, where she received her BFA in 2019.
Shannon lives and works in Southern California where she is currently focused on creating portrait paintings that make connections with the physical body and the intangible parts of our human existence.

Alexandra Haiven is a self-taught portraiture artist, currently living and creating out of Southern California.
Resisting the idea of the n**e form as inherently sexual, Alexandra uses self-shot portraiture to reclaim her own form in powerful, gentle, and sometimes animalistic expressions.
Alexandra has embraced the body as an instrument of artistic creation. She carves forms out of light, gently inspired by the marble sculpted works of the masters, romanticism, folklore, and naturalism.
Using self-shot portraiture to create depictions of her inner world and hoping to contextualize the struggle of healing, she has spent nearly a decade building a portfolio of pieces previously kept from the public eye.

This series seeks to explore women's experience through folklore and myth: Tragic, cautionary, and often bittersweet. The yearning leading us to chaos; the choices thrust upon us; the desperation to reconnect with our spirituality and inner world, to shed the sins we cast over ourselves, and to step into our power. Using romanticism and folklore as key elements, the artist hopes to examine what it means to be human through literary women.

“The mighty oak tree from an acorn first grows its roots. The roots are the base which draws its nutrients from the soil. Once the roots are strong, the tree- its branches leaves and flowers, will have a healthy long life. All trees are a loving union of earth and sky. Twelve artists participated in creating trees and roots in various printmaking mediums, which were interchanged to create a wide variety of combinations. The trees collectively become a forest.

Artists: Yeansoo Aum, Elisabeth Beck, Andra Broekelschen, Christina Yasmin Fesmire, Bill Jaros, Nguyen Ly, Bill Myers, Marina Polic, Francisco Rogido, Tracy Skinner, Sue Stoyanoff, Paula Voss, Zana Zupur”
