🙏🤩SO many thanks to our Victorian Tea Society for hosting yet another amazing Holly Berry Tea fundraiser today with two afternoon seating times, all their hard work is so very appreciated!
🎄For anyone who didn’t get a chance to attend and see the Kellogg House decked out in all her Victorian holiday finery, your chance is tomorrow!! Sunday 10am to 2pm we’re having our Public Hours and you can tour the Kellogg House as well as all 12 acres of our grounds!
🤗Special thanks to our newest superstar volunteer @bethinblack who not only stepped up to help us set up for today’s tea, made this video AND wants to now join the VTS!! We’re so lucky to have her in our HMOC Family! We’re always welcoming and so very thankful for any and all volunteers, if you’re interested in joining us, let us know! 🫶
🤩“Practically perfect in every way”. Enjoy this rare behind(above) the scenes glimpse from the top of Kellogg House showing our glorious HMOC grounds, because the rooftop is NOT accessible to the public during any tours or events, no matter how nicely you ask.😊
👵🏻Our Victorian lady is 125 years old and while her age may not show, she feels it, and the rooftop is not rated safe for foot traffic, for your and her safety!
🕵️♀️There’s plenty of amazing house that IS open for you to explore though! We welcome you to take a tour with us, or book one of the incredible 👻 haunted Kellogg House tours with @darcystaniforth and @hauntedorangecounty, they sell out every month for a good reason!
📍See you at the museum!

🤩Adoring our day with all our kidpreneurs today at the @mackidsantaana and HMOC Children’s Business Fair!! Our local community children designed their own businesses and launched them with us today and we’re SO PROUD OF THEM!! Thank you to all of our HMOC family that came out to support, it’s still going, stop by before 2 and you can join the fun!
🎃Tomorrow! Part of our free event from 10-2 we’re smashing those old pumpkins and you’re welcome to bring yours to participate as well! Pumpkin pieces will be donated to local farms for chicken feed or composted!
🎃Don’t trash those pumpkins, SMASH them with HMOC! Instead of throwing away your jack-o-lantern or porch pumpkins, now that Halloween is over bring them to the museum this Sunday 11/5 from 10-2 during our FREE @mackidsantaana Kids Fair supporting our community’s littlest entrepreneurs and have some fun with our @gospelswampfarm trebuchet and mallets and see how far you can fling them! The pumpkin pieces will be donated to farms for chicken feed and/or composted, so it’s good for the environment and a lot of fun!! This day of fun and education is free for the community, and you’re welcome to explore our grounds! Kellogg House tours will be available for a $10 charge or $5 for kids 12 and under, and as always FREE for HMOC members. See you at the museum! 🎃
Whether macabre, mournful, magical, or manicured, dolls are perhaps as multi-faceted as human life itself, and our perceptions of them can also range from an affinity, to an outright fear. Dolls have a long history serving a multitude of purposes from mere toys, to roles in religious rites and rituals, helping people in times of mourning, protecting them from worry or anxiety, and educating children on various topics.
From the HMOC Kellogg House’s historical era, Victorian dolls reveal the lavish, class-obsessed aestheticism of the era. Dressed in fashionable clothing, and wigged with human hair, porcelain dolls became status symbols. For families who couldn’t afford expensive porcelain or bisque (unglazed porcelain) dolls, they often crafted their own dolls from common materials such as cloth, rags, paper, wood, and even wax.
Don’t miss our limited-time October mini-exhibit featuring antique dolls and dollhouses from Heritage Museum’s collection. Featuring:
19th Century German Bisque Figurines
1920s Sock Doll
Pin Cushion Doll
1937 Madame Alexander Quintuplet
Tricycle Crib Dolls
19th Century J.D. Kestner Doll
Shirley Temple Doll
Scarlett O’Hara Replica Doll
Modern Sukiyo Doll (Victorian-Inspired)
Traditional Guatemalan Dolls
Victorian Embroidered Cloth Dolls
1940s Warner & Sons Schilling Talking
Baby Doll
Available for viewing in the Kellogg House during our public hours this Sunday October 22nd and Sunday October 29th, both from 10am-2pm.
As always HMOC Members gain free access to the grounds and Kellogg House during public hours, and this month included in the member virtual perks is the new blog post From Manicured to Macabre: A Brief History of Dolls. (by Museum Conservator Sydney Horner with Research Intern Ma
