🫶😊Community outreach night attending Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center’s 2023 Winter Exhibitions Reception!

Their 2 winter exhibitions include celebrating the return of Muzeo Express: spanning two rooms in the historic Carnegie Building the exhibit displays the personal model railroading diorama and train set collection incredibly handcrafted by Adam England, the Chief Operating Officer for The Muckenthaler Cultural Center and our own former Director of Programs, as well as his wife Kathy Williams also our former longtime Director of Education! 🤗 Truly a local moment ♾️

“TRADITIONS” held in the Main Gallery is a special collaborative exhibition, curated by Thinkspace Projects and Tlaloc Studios, celebrating “the many ways we honor heritage, ritual, and family through the artistic expression of working SoCal artists”.

One room of the exhibit features the work of Estevan Oriol an internationally celebrated photographer, director, and urban lifestyle entrepreneur known for his distinct, gritty 35mm black and white portfolio documenting Chicano and Cholo culture.

Muzeo TRADITIONS is on view December 2, 2023 through February 25, 2024 so be sure you stop by!

👐This Native American Heritage Day, HMOC is sharing eight resources on how you might become a better, more informed ally to the indigenous community. Swipe through the slides for clear actionable items you can use, and then visit our blog post for all the links and resources mentioned here! (🔗 hmocmembers.org/post/acknowledging-native-american-heritage, unlocked on our Member Portal for you free of charge!)

Acknowledging the tribal and ancestral stewardship of the land you occupy is a crucially important first step toward educating oneself on indigenous heritage.

“It is vital to respectfully acknowledge the caretakers of the land that we now call Heritage Museum of Orange County. Santa Ana sits on the ancestral lands of the Tongva (Gabrielino) people as well as the Acjachemen (Juaneño) people. We honor the Tongva and Acjachemen elders and descendants, past, present, and future, who continue to steward this land and its waters. We are grateful to work on the land of the Tongva and Acjachemen people. We commit to uplifting this resilient community. We commit to learning how we can become better stewards of this sacred land.”

🥂🙌We did it! Amidst the most amazing, incredible weekend we quietly passed a milestone and hit 10,000 (and still going up!) followers on IG!

The growth is amazing but each of you are not numbers to us, YOU are HMOC FAMILY, and the reason we’re able to continue to flourish as your local Orange County historical museum and events center almost 40 years after first opening to the public.

In this fast paced world being able to connect on a personal level with members of our community is so important.

Our online presence is an extension of the physical museum, and a way to actively engage, build relationships and perform community outreach every day with all of you! So keep those messages, comments and tags coming, interacting with you and amplifying your voices is why we’re here!

One of our challenges as your local historical Orange County museum is balancing being as open and accessible for the community’s enjoyment and use as possible; while still protecting and safeguarding the property from break-ins, vandalism, theft and worse.

Occasionally we get people who love HMOC so much they sneak in after hours and take pieces of it home with them. As a non profit museum working year round for the community, the need to unexpectedly replace these items is especially hard to try and work into an already carefully planned budget.

Even worse is when a robbery affects our beloved school children who have visited us weekly since 1985 when HMOC first opened to the public for hands on immersive educational and historical field trips.

Recently we had a nighttime break in on the property and the thieves were able to make off with key items used on our interactive Gold Rush and Kellogg House field trip tours including our pickaxe, birdcage, trunk, washboard, drying rack, and more.

We’re asking our community for YOUR help.

Giving Tuesday, the national day of charitable contributions isn’t until November 28th but we have opened our fundraising campaign NOW to try and reach as many community members as possible.

Your generous donations of any amount will allow HMOC to replace the items stolen, purchase replacements for over worked items and strengthen our existing security precautions.

Your gift will allow school children county wide to continue to enjoy the full benefit of our museum’s hands on immersive educational and historical field trip programs.

We invite you to join us in making a difference in the hearts and minds of the community’s youth by donating any amount today!

11/13/2023

🙏Happy posthumous 97th birthday to long time Santa Ana resident and the Official Black Historian of Orange County, Harriet Tyler! Harriet’s donation to HMOC of her personal collection of thousands of photographs, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, brochures, and artifacts relating to Black history in Orange County, amassed over a lifetime of service to the community, made possible our Summer of Civil Rights Exhibition this past summer at the museum. Through her tireless activism and diligent record-keeping we are able to preserve the history of Orange County’s Black Community in her name.

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana on November 12, 1926 Harriet moved to Southern California at the age of 17, soon after marrying and settling in Santa Ana. She quickly became involved in her local community and joined the Orange County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She also became an active member of Second Baptist Church of Santa Ana, the first Black congregation in Orange County.

In 1969, Harriet founded the Interested Citizens Group of Santa Ana. The Interested Citizens made it their mission to provide scholarships to students in the Black community. They hosted countless “Beautillions,” or pageants, where young men and women debuted in society, showcased their talents, and received scholarships. Later on, the group expanded to include service to senior citizens and became the Interested Citizens Group of Orange County. Harriet was involved in activist and community organizations including the NAACP Orange County Branch, the Interested Citizens Group, Second Baptist Church of Santa Ana’s Usher Board, the Santa Ana Black Historical Society, and countless others.

Those who were close to Harriet Tyler often called her a “powerhouse.” “She had a reputation of being a doer. When you wanted to get something done, you called Harriet,” her memorial program states. Harriet passed away on June 10, 2018 but her legacy and impact on the local community, all of Orange County and Heritage Museum in particular will live on forever. 🙏
