This painting is an homage to a favorite childhood fairytale, The Wild Swans by Hans Christian Andersen. The story follows Elisa, whose eleven enchanted brothers were transformed into swans. Only she can break the spell through a labyrinth of trials.

I’ve reimagined the tale for this painting, replacing the swans with the many species of herons that grace Sanibel and Captiva and giving Elisa an angelic presence. The result is a blend of folklore, faith, and coastal wildlife. Much more work to do with this painting. I enjoy documenting the creative process. Welcome “Elisa and the Herons” to the fold.

A big truck. A big painting. A big little island life.

“Mermaid Dreams”. A long time ago when mothers found ways to make ordinary routines feel magical, there was a good climbing tree at the top of our street and just beyond it, hidden by a stand of evergreens, a lovely glimmering pond. The kids loved to climb that tree, and then venture the 30 seconds to the pond for stories. Through icy afternoons, endless snow days and hazy humid summer evenings, the light that skipped and skimmed across that pond was always there, as if it were just waiting for the rapt attention of littles—my H. still remembers it exactly this way, too.

Queen of the Sea. 36 x 36” oil painting on 1.5” cradle canvas. So much to say about the story behind this painting, but best for now to let her speak for herself.

Archangel Michael is traditionally regarded as the ultimate protector and defender of truth and a symbol of courage, justice, and divine strength. Many people pray to Michael to overcome fear and adversity. While usually depicted with a sword and shield, I have painted him holding sparks of light.
