Hello all. We appreciate all of your responses. Please don't just like our statuses, but please share and like our page.

We continue to work on improvements to our museum and will be in the process (for sometime) to rearrange and renovate. We are seeking grants for this purpose. We also accept public donations.

Right now the museum is looking for "2" student desks or a narrow tables to fill out some of our project corners. These can be older but in good condition. Approx. 2-21/2 feet wide by up to 4 feet long. We are also looking for two "old timey" rag rugs that can add color and depth to a couple of our corners with chairs. These would need to be donated.

We appreciate all of your kindnesses in helping us grow and be part of the community.

The Sanford Museum is looking for a new Board member that could donate a few hours as needed per month to help in our Technology and Social media areas. We would be interested in someone that has knowledge of the towns of Sanford and La Sauses. We are especially interested in someone who has knowledge of the Native American and Hispanic heritage of these areas. Contact a Board Member at the top of the page if interested.

The museum has received the latest book highlighting the history of the Catawba Indians and their genealogy. Five of those families came west with the early Mormons and settled in the Sanford/Manassa areas. JUDY CANTY MARTIN is the researcher and author of this marvelous book. She is also a direct descendant of the Catawba in this area. We thank her for donating a copy to the library. There are many descendants still local who would love to see their families histories. The book is available for reference in the library.

Memory Workshop -- When: Sunday, July 29, from 2-4 pm
Where: Fort Garland Museum, 29477 Highway 159 in Fort Garland, CO

Help tell your stories at this workshop. "This memory workshop will help develop the next phase of the Borderlands of Southern Colorado exhibit. We need your help. Your memories and family history of the San Luis Valley are very important to the history of Colorado." Estevan Rael-Galvez sponsored by History Colorado

When: Sunday, July 29, from 2-4 pm
Where: Fort Garland Museum, 29477 Highway 159 in Fort Garland

This is a special invitation to an event this weekend at Fort Garland Museum with Estevan Rael-Galvez, former State Historian of New Mexico and partner on the Borderlands of Southern Colorado exhibit development. Here is a message from him:

I am honored and excited to work in partnership with History Colorado and especially to work with the residents of the San Luis Valley to begin the project — 'gathering memory.' It reminds me of something I once wrote, which remains true today and of this initiative:

"History is worth remembering. Here, remembering the past is like opening a gift. Remembering invites us to listen to what we hear and to look at what we see, it also invites us to pull back the layers that make it contested—people, places, moments in time and the stories that reveal the fullness of the human condition. Yet, like any gift worth holding onto, it also carries a responsibility. We must be able to learn from those that have gone before us and we must be able to teach our children to appreciate the value of this historical understanding. It will invite them, in turn, to make History that is also worth remembering.
- Estevan

This memory workshop will help develop the next phase of the Borderlands of Southern Colorado exhibit. We need your help. Your memories and family history of the San Luis Valley are very important to the history of Colorado.

After visiting the Stockade make sure to come by our museum to learn more about Zebulon Pike.

On this day in Colorado History (Feb. 26, 1807) Spanish cavalrymen arrest members of the U.S. Army reconnaissance expedition led by Captain Zebulon Pike in the San Luis Valley. The reconnaissance party is taken to Santa Fe, then on to Chihuahua. Pike and his men were not released until July of 1807.
