This powder horn, dated 1762 and 1803, was donated by descendants of Barnabas Ewer of Sandwich (1756-1835) and would have been used to carry gunpowder in early New England. Made from a natural horn and fitted with wooden plugs, it was lightweight, durable, and designed to be carried daily.

In the 18th and early 19th centuries, fi****ms were part of everyday life. They were used for hunting, protection, and militia service, and tools like this powder horn were essential equipment. Many were personalized, reflecting the close connection between individuals and the objects they depended upon.

Long before modern systems of supply and infrastructure, people carried what they needed with them. Objects like this remind us that self-reliance was not simply an ideal in early America—it was part of daily experience.

✨ Big things are coming to our new HyArts Campus location! ✨
With the announcement of our second location opening at the HyArts Campus in Hyannis, we’re excited to introduce the talented artists who will be leading classes in this new creative space. 🎨🔥
Please help us welcome Chloe Jones, our very first Artist in Residence at the HyArts Campus! 🌊✨
Chloe is an artist with a true love for glass. As both a glassblower and flameworker, she also works across many other materials including clay, wood, and even blacksmithing. She honors craft, hard work, and is always pushing herself toward new creative challenges.
After studying at Middlesex Community College and the University of Hartford, Chloe discovered her passion for glassblowing and went on to graduate from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2026 with a BFA in Glass. She also discovered a love for teaching while working at NOCA Glass School. 🔥
We are thrilled to have Chloe joining our growing creative community and can’t wait for everyone to meet her and experience her classes! 👏

This Civil War knapsack belonged to Augustus Holway of Sandwich, who served as a private in Company D of the 45th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. His name—painted in white across the flap—helped identify the pack among the thousands of similar items carried by Union soldiers during the war.

The 45th Massachusetts was organized in 1862 as a nine-month regiment and served in North Carolina during the Civil War. Like many men from Sandwich, Holway joined a volunteer regiment raised from communities across Massachusetts.

Knapsacks carried the necessities of daily military life: clothing, personal belongings, tools, and keepsakes from home. Worn on long marches and exposed to weather, they became deeply personal objects shaped by experience and survival.

Donated to the Sandwich Historical Society in 1915 by Mrs. A. R. Holway, this knapsack reflects not only military service, but also the ways families and communities preserved the memory of the Civil War long after it ended.
