Happy Fun Fact Friday: As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence tomorrow I thought it would be interesting to go off the vehicle history / information path and talk briefly historically about the American Revolution. The revolution began officially on April 19, 1775, with the skirmishes in Lexington and Concord Massachusetts, and technically ended with the surrender of the British forces under Cornwallis at Yorktown Virginia, although the war didn’t officially end till Sept. 3, 1783, when the Treaty of Paris was signed. Some interesting numbers and facts from the revolution:
Thomas Jefferson was 33 when he signed the declaration & Washington 43.
56 men signed the Declaration of Independence.
Approximately 25,000 – 30,000 Americans died during the Revolution (17,000 disease / 7,000 killed in war).
230,000 Americans fought during the course of the war.
Roughly 11,000 men died aboard English harbor POW ships in various areas.
About 10,000 French troops fought alongside the American forces.
Population of the 13 colonies was about 2.5 million at the time of Revolution.
George III king of England was 37 at the start of the revolution and ruled until 1820.
The Delaware river where Washington crossed in Dec. 1776 was only 300 yds wide. The Battle of Saratoga NY in Oct. 1777 was the turning point that brought the French’s help officially for the Revolution.
The American Revolution seems like such ancient history, but it was such an integral part of what we enjoy today in this incredible place that we call home. Let us not forget what was done then and throughout our country’s history to maintain the freedoms we continue to celebrate, and Lord willing we will be blessed with for many years to come.
