Excited to promote an experimental photography workshop, Cyanotype Toning: Beyond the Blue!

Join Mohammed Shamma to explore ways to transform cyanotype prints beyond their classic blue. Experiment with botanical toning baths using green tea, coffee, and safflower petals, as well as bleaching techniques to adjust highlights and details.

You’ll leave with 3–5 finished prints and new techniques to continue exploring at home. No prior cyanotype experience required!

We’re excited to introduce 𝗜𝘀𝗮𝗮𝗰 𝗧𝗶𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝗶 𝗟𝗶𝗻, one of the artists featured in ART FWD: 𝘐𝘯 𝘖𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴, curated by Tucker Nichols and on view at MarinMOCA September 19–December 20, 2026.

Lin’s practice explores the space where representation and buzzing abstraction meet. His densely layered surfaces are filled with calligraphic, brushed, and hand-drawn patterns that express both the logic and complexity of written language. Cartoon figures, often cats and dogs, make appearances throughout his work, sometimes as larger-than-life cut-outs covered in pattern themselves.

Working across painting, screenprinting, collage, and installation, Lin brings together language, pattern, and playful imagery. He has created several large-scale murals, including commissions for Mural Arts Philadelphia and Facebook’s headquarters in San Francisco, and has exhibited his work widely in the United States and internationally. His work is held in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Berkeley Art Museum, and Free Library of Philadelphia.

We’re excited to introduce 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗗’𝗔𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗼, one of the artists featured in ART FWD: 𝘐𝘯 𝘖𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴, curated by Tucker Nichols and on view at MarinMOCA September 19–December 20, 2026.

A San Francisco-based second-generation sign painter, pinstriper, and fine artist, D’Amato’s practice explores the visual histories of California subcultures and the disappearing craft of hand-painted signage. Working with hand lettering, airbrush, gold leaf, and pinstriping, she creates paintings that preserve and reinterpret the signs, lettering, and visual traditions embedded in California’s built environment.

For 𝘐𝘯 𝘖𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴, D’Amato will create a new site-specific mural at MarinMOCA, bringing her distinctive approach to lettering and vernacular design into the exhibition.

What happens when words become both language and image?

In ART FWD: 𝘐𝘯 𝘖𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴, artist and curator Tucker Nichols explores the ways words function as both concept and visual form. Bringing together artists who use language, symbols, signs, and mark-making in physical and unexpected ways, the exhibition considers our fundamental need to communicate, connect, and make meaning.

In this video, Tucker shares the thinking behind 𝘐𝘯 𝘖𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴 and his interest in the many ways words can take shape.

ART FWD: 𝘐𝘯 𝘖𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴 opens with MarinMOCA’s annual ART FWD celebration on 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟲, 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟱–𝟴:𝟯𝟬 𝗣𝗠. Artist Highlight: Deborah Lohrke

Deborah Lohrke is a California-based artist whose practice centers on drawing as a sustained, process-driven form of inquiry. Working across decades, she has developed a language grounded in repetition, structure, and attentive mark-making, often using fountain pen ink to explore the material possibilities of line, rhythm, and accumulation.

Her work is shaped by an interest in how simple systems can expand into complex visual fields through duration and focus. Lohrke’s drawings unfold gradually, balancing control with intuitive movement, and often reflect a meditative engagement with time, healing, and perception.

Lohrke moved to Benicia in 1982 to work with Judy Chicago on The Birth Project, contributing to photographic production and exhibition development. She later completed her BFA (1989) and MFA (1993) at Mills College, where she worked with Catherine Wagner and assisted on projects including Home and Other Stories.

Veronica Ryan’s hand-crocheted and netted structures evoke fishing nets, stockings, and systems of transport.
Informed by observations of fishing nets in Cornwall and techniques learned from her mother, Ryan’s weaving practice links domestic craft traditions to global networks of labor, trade, and exchange.

Paired with organic and discarded materials, these woven forms act as both support and container. Delicate yet resilient, they function as emotional and psychological vessels, holding multiple histories, and associations at once.
