Featured in the Corner Shop Sausalito inside the Sausalito Center for the Arts will be Hermanโ€™s figurative and abstract ceramic vessels and large scale wood cuts.

Known for his influence on the West Coast art scene since the late 1970โ€™s, Herman approaches ceramics as a site of experimentation. Voids, protrusions, and uneven contours disrupt any expectation of symmetry or function, allowing the vessel to operate as a chromatic event, a record of heat, gesture, and chance fixed in clay.

Roger Herman was born in Saarbruecken, Germany, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. He earned his MFA from the Akademie der Kรผnste in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1976, before relocating to California in 1977. He was a beloved professor of painting and drawing in the Department of Art at UCLA 1984-2018.

Hermanโ€™s exhibit is on view concurrently with ๐Ž๐๐„๐ ๐ˆ๐๐๐”๐ˆ๐‘๐˜: ๐”๐‚ ๐€๐‘๐“๐’, an exhibition of works by a new generation of artists from the renowned art practice programs at the University of California, Los Angeles, where Herman taught, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, Davis in the .

The art departments at these universities have long been recognized as seminal hubs of artistic experimentation and critical thought, consistently incubating artists who leverage academic investigation with artistic rigor.

WILLIAM T. WILEY: & So...
Opening at the Bolinas Museum
February 5 - April 3, 2022

Co-Curated by Jennifer Gately & Jennifer Bailey Wechsler !

A true maverick, Marin artist William T. Wiley (b. 1937 - 2021) created thought-provoking art with an idiosyncratic style that defied classification for over 50 years.
Incorporating layers of narrative with a host of recurring symbols and characters, he expressed an enigmatic imagination, often calling attention to critical issues of the times through drawing, watercolor, paint, found objects, printmaking, film, and performance art. Rife with pointed societal commentary and witty personal musings, this exhibition brings together works dating back to 1970 that illuminate broad interests ranging from war, politics, the economy, and environmental concerns, to literature, art world trends, Zen philosophy, and more.

Born in Indiana in 1937, he was raised in Richland, Washington, and attended the San Francisco Art Institute (then the California School of Fine Arts).
Soon after graduating in 1962, he began to teach at UC Davis, where he enjoyed a long and colorful career, inspiring and collaborating with such notable artists, students, and friends as Bruce Nauman, Robert Hudson, and Robert Arneson, who together would become anchors of the Bay Area Funk Art movement in the 1970s. In the late 1960s, Wiley purchased land in Woodacre along San Geronimo Creek, where he lived and worked for most of his long career. His work has been featured in museums across the nation and can be found in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; among others.
