We are thrilled to present Poetic Utterances: Work by Viviana Paredes, a solo exhibition merging glass sculpture, organic materials, Indigenous languages, and soundscapes

Supported by the Creative Work Fund, this immersive exhibition features site-specific installations and milestone works spanning the San Francisco–based artist, Viviana Paredes’ career.

Our current exhibition, Q***rennial: Identity Through Fashion, comes to a close on August 9th!

✮ We invite you to our final First Fridays event part of South this Friday August 7th 6-9pm! ✮

The gallery will be open from 12pm - 9pm with First Fridays festivities starting at 6pm

MACLA’s Q***rennial: Identity through Fashion explores how individuals represent themselves through textile and design. The artists delve into how fashion serves as a means of visibility, resistance, and self-actualization within the q***r community. From historical coded dressing to contemporary gender-fluid designs, the exhibition showcases the role of LGBTQ+ individuals in shaping fashion. Visitors are invited to reflect on the power of personal expression and its impact on identity and culture.

Lo que no se ve explores armor through the symbolism of rings, a contemporary form of armor. Each ring is tied to specific moments in my life, both painful and joyful. Worn as lived experience but shown as a physical example of the vulnerability we feel without our armor.

Alice Monteiro, (b.2001, San José, CA) is a Mexican-American multidisciplinary artist currently pursuing her BFA at San Diego State University. Her practice is rooted in the intersections of culture, identity, and femininity, creating dialogue about the complexities of oppression within and beyond her community.

June, a very rainy month in the Caribbean. There is nothing like a late-night storm to keep you reflecting on the choices you made. It’s an interior landscape of an unfinished space that feels too small to stand up.

José is an architect, cartoonist and visual artist. He graduated from the San Alejandro National Academy of Plastic Arts with a focus in Painting and Drawing (2013) and later he graduated as an Urban Architect from the Technological University of Havana José Antonio Echeverría (2019). His work has been exhibited and published in books and specialized art magazines inside and outside Cuba such as “The Q***r Bible”.

I wanted this look to depict a modern jester. It teeters the tight line between fashion and costume; emphasizing the way what we wear can all be part of performing.

Niko Sanrio is a drag clown based out of Detroit, Michigan. Specializing in costume design using recycled materials she blends high fashion and bafoonery into one.

Cortezuma is a persona that emerged from excavating my Mexican heritage. This is the child of Conquistador and the Tlatoani. This child is blinded by the crown (s)he wears- it is too big, it covers the eyes. These shoes are inspired by the prostitutes of Tijuana. This is Cortezuma’s second pair. The first pair completely fell apart. They were thrown away.

Born in Los Angeles, Noz lived in Florence, Italy, Berlin, Germany, and Provincetown, Massachusetts. She’s
exhibited at Berkeley Art Museum, YBCA, San Diego Museum of Art, SF Maritime Museum, and Provincetown Art Association & Museum. Noz holds a MFA from CCA, and an MS from Wheelock College, Boston. He currently teaches at SJSU, and at de Young Museum of Art.
