Originally known as Llanada Villa, today it stands as an architectural wonder, a time capsule of a bygone era and one of America’s most celebrated - and mysterious - historic mansions. Whether driven by grief, guilt, or something more unknowable, she continuously built onto her home without a master plan, creating a sprawling labyrinth. After the 1906 earthquake, Sarah left the front rooms of the mansion unrepaired while she continued building on and using the back of the house until her death in 1922.

The Grand Ballroom was later restored by the museum’s preservation team in the mid-1970s.

As September 5th approaches, the anniversary of Sarah Wi******er’s death, we prepare the mansion to resemble a Victorian home in mourning. The decor is inspired by Victorian mourning traditions and the customs once used to honor and remember those who had passed 🌹🖤
