Why are we reading Moby Dick?
Have you ever wanted to dive into Moby Dick, but just couldn't get past "Call me Ishmael?” Well, you’re not alone. So, we thought that this summer we would tackle this classic together, here in our online ICA Reads book club. The inspiration for this literary jaunt is our upcoming exhibition Diane Samuels: It’s a Long Story. Samuels creates monumental works by painstakingly and meticulously hand-transcribing entire novels in micro-script. The centerpiece of the ICA's exhibition is a transcription of Herman Melville's Moby Dick, written on remnants of archival paper and recycled prints with images pertaining to the text. “Call me Ishmael” is at the top of the work, which measures 47 feet long by 8 feet wide. So, whether you’ve never read it or can’t get enough of this tale of a whale, let's read Moby Dick together. And let's use this space to rave, groan, or simply delight in our collaborative journey through this classic. The culmination of our efforts will be the viewing of Samuel's breathtaking installation at the ICA in November! For those of you who would also like some in person dialogue, stay tuned for ICA Reads meet-ups in the gallery during the next few months.
