Episode 15: "Chennault Road." On September 1, 1945, an official letter from the Yunnan provincial government. At its 946th session, the provincial provisional council resolved to name the main road from the entrance of Wujiaba Airfield in Kunming to the Tuodong Road intersection "Chennault Road," honoring his long-standing service to China's war of resistance.

On March 18, 1944, an aviation gasoline report landed on the conference table. The number was chilling: the Fourteenth Air Force's bases in East China held, on average, only 38 percent of their minimum fuel reserve. Keeping fighters in the air over East China demanded one million gallons, nearly 3,775 tons of gasoline, every month. Every gallon had to cross the Hump or grind up the Kutsing-Tushan highway to reach the front. Without fuel, even the finest pilots could not take off. China and America were fighting the same air war, and that war ran on gasoline. Thirty-eight percent, a number that turned every drop into a lifeline.

"The Last Letter" | Side by Side in the Skies · Episode 13

On May 18, 1942, a letter left an airfield in China, bound for America.

The writer: Thomas Trumble, secretary of the Flying Tigers. The recipient: the father of Tom Jones, a fallen pilot.

Tom had served aboard the carrier Yorktown before volunteering for China. Over Hanoi he fought with such courage that Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek personally promoted him to vice squadron leader. But he would never come home.

Trumble wrote: "We have lost a comrade and a friend. The enemy has lost an indomitable foe. But the world is, and will be, a happier world because of him and his deeds."

Behind every Flying Tigers legend, there was a letter like this one — and a family, an ocean away.

🛩️ [Side by Side in the Skies · Episode 11] Racing the Clock for Spare Parts

On March 3, 1944, a decoded cable reached General Chennault's desk. Willauer's message carried a warning: truck spare parts were stuck on slow sea-shipping schedules, and further delay would wreck the great truck overhaul, threatening eastern China's air defense and the Hump airlift's allocations.

Only one answer remained: top air priority for the parts, from America all the way to Chabua. The cable's best estimate: the parts would leave the United States by April 1.

A race against the calendar, fought in the skies and on the highways. China and America, side by side.

🛩️ [Side by Side in the Skies · Episode 10] The Bold Plan to Borrow Trucks

On March 29, 1944, Brigadier General Hearn, chief of staff at theater headquarters, wrote back to General Chennault. The letter offered no excuses, only a bold plan.

First, borrow trucks from the idle Fifth Army and build a tactical trucking unit to hold the Southwest Highway, the lifeline. Then the bolder stroke: bring in five-ton truck trailers through the Soviet route, with American GI drivers taking the wheel themselves. The Minister of Communications also secured water and airlift slots for truck spare parts, so every truck on the road would have parts to keep it rolling.

Borrowed trucks, borrowed roads, holding up the same promise: China and America, side by side.

In the spring of 1944, China was running out of fuel.

Planes sat idle on the runways. Trucks burned charcoal, stripping the hillsides bare.

Then came a daring idea: if fuel could not be flown in fast enough, why not fly in the oilfield itself? Drill rigs and pumps, loaded onto C-47 transports and airlifted over the Hump to Gansu.

The planners did the math: one bold investment of airlift, and China would pump her own oil, ending the crisis for good.

Flying drilling rigs into China sounds like a tall tale, yet it was a blueprint seriously drawn up in 1944 by allies fighting side by side.
