Behind the scenes for Saturday’s WAS THERE EVER UNITY?, a one-day exhibition at SoEx featuring over 60 artists part of the Unity Skate community! We love you all!!! 🛹🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🫰🏽

In addition, the day’s programming at Southern Exposure includes: a skate jam, THERE Skateboards video premiere featuring Lau Willems (Ghent, Belgium), and DJ sets and performances by Edgar and Ryanislit, and more. Come celebrate with us and dont forget to bring your board, too! All levels welcome! Or, just come and enjoy the festivities!

Unity Fest is a skateboarding, art, and music festival with a focus on q***r skateboarding. Open to all and largely free to attend, this 5th edition of Unity Fest—organized by Bay Area artist Jeffrey Cheung and collaborators—takes place at Southern Exposure and key locations across San Francisco.

We are thrilled to see you this evening for LEXICA’s closing reception! Meet our artists and catch Kristin Bauer’s (Kristin Bauer) ROOF OF THE MOUTH performance at 6pm.

Henna Vainio (Henna Vainio) works in ceramic forms that treat language as physical and political material— something that can be stacked, woven, repeated and stressed until its meaning begins to shift. During her residency at The Space Program San Francisco (The Space Program), Henna wove together wax bars that are typically used in the bronze casting process as gates into unique bronze pieces. Henna completed all the metal finishing and patina work at The Space Program. We at SoEx are so proud to share with you her works!

Congratulations to Henna, The Space Program SF and curator Emma Rosenbaum (Emma Rosenbaum) for this undertaking to create LEXICA. Beyond the technical skill it takes to shape and cast metal at this scale, Henna’s works create a space to rethink how language, power, and meaning interact.

Join us this Saturday at 6pm to celebrate the closing of Lexica— a journey that evolves beyond Southern Exposure for our artists and our beloved curator Emma Rosenbaum (Emma Rosenbaum)!

In Lexica, Brody Reiman shares sculptural and installation works from her residency at The Space Program San Francisco (The Space Program). As part of the collaborative castaneda/reiman, Reiman explored the architecture of home as both a psychological and tactile experience. Her pieces intricately reference each other as objects and environments, down to a blossom from a plot just right outside of SoEx which is preserved in resin in one of the works. By casting the seasonal bloom, Reiman integrates an ephemeral site-specific presence into the perpetual structure of her work.

Southern Exposure, The Space Program San Francisco, and Emma Rosenbaum are looking forward to further transformations of Brody’s practice!

Join us September 12 at 6 PM for the closing reception of Lexica! Kristin Bauer (Kristin Bauer) will perform ROOF OF THE MOUTH, responding to works from her residency at The Space Program San Francisco (The Space Program).

The performance takes listeners on a sonic journey through Kristin’s Flipbook Mixtapes—a personal library dataset blending Touchdesigner, Digitakt, and MOOG synths with her own hormonal data, NorCal coastal field recordings of her time with her daughters, original poetry, and generative text printed over NASA and NOAA imagery. Using her body and life as sites of inquiry, Kristin seamlessly bridges the digital, physical, and personal.

Curator Emma Rosenbaum (Emma Rosenbaum ), The Space Program SF, and Southern Exposure congratulate Kristin on this ambitious, reflexive work.

Experience Danielle Lawrence’s (Danielle Lawrence) pictorial compositions on silkscreen at Lexica by September 12 at our 6p closing reception!

Danielle’s practice reorganizes painting’s traditional anatomy by embracing ceramic, thread, fabric elements, as well as “feminine” mark making such as staining, dyeing, mending, and washing. Southern Exposure and Lexica curator Emma Rosenbaum (Emma Rosenbaum) are thrilled to share Danielle’s works created during her residency at The Space Program San Francisco (The Space Program).

Tomorrow is your last chance to view our current exhibition at the gallery! Join us for the closing reception of My Name is Palestine happening Saturday evening.

For the closing ceremony, SoEx will be partnering with Arab.AMP in presenting SPARKS #3 - LABOR; conversation and performances by NAKA Dance Theatre and Wael Buhaissy of Al Juthoor Dabke Troupe. Wael Buhaissy performs songs on oud. Naka Dance performs “Last Seen,” choreographed and performed by José Ome Mazatl and Debby Kajiyama, with sound by giant undersea creatures.

Mission Valley Summer provides students in the Bay Area ages 16-21 with a visual art space to explore issues relevant to them and their community, exercise leadership skills, and utilize art as a tool for social change.

Three Lead Teaching Artists will work with Southern Exposure’s Artists in Education Program Manager to collaborate with and teach approximately 20-40 youth in a series of in-person workshops to produce visual arts projects based on a socially relevant theme. The program runs for 4 weeks: June 15 – July 2 & July 6 – July 9, 2026, Monday through Thursday, 12:00 – 3:00 PM, plus additional prep and clean up times to be scheduled. The program culminates in a final exhibition presented to the public at Southern Exposure opening July 23, 2026.

Teaching Artists will receive $33/hour, payable twice monthly. Apply before our deadline on Wednesday, May 27, 2026!

Join Southern Exposure THIS SATURDAY as we open “My Name is Palestine: Echoes from The Palestinian Museum’s Music Online Exhibition أنا إسمي شعب فلسطين ‘Ana Ismi Shab Falastin’” with a musical performance by Spite of Darkness, Detroit-based quartet led by Palestinian-American composer Mike Khoury. In collaboration with The Palestinian Museum (Birzeit) and Arab.AMP (Oakland), SoEx will debut an exhibition of sound and image sourced from The Palestinian Museum’s archives to create a wholly new and immersive experience of Palestinian life, anchored in musicality.
