Maximilian Contemporary is pleased to announce a solo exhibition for Los Angeles based landscape painter, Adam Harrison. Known for his observational paintings often depicting realistic urban city-scapes; for his inaugural exhibition at Maximilian Contemporary in San Francisco, the artist has taken a colorful turn.

For much of the pandemic, Adam Harrison chose to spend his days working in Carrol Canyon, a beautiful stretch of undeveloped hills in the Santa Monica Mountains, removed from the sprawling city of Los Angeles. It was here where the artist assembled a “pop up” art studio every day for two and a half years, taking in the natural beautify of the area for two summers, autumns, winters, and springs.

During this time the artist began to break away from his observational style of painting to experiment more with abstraction, trying to bridge the gap between what was seen and what was felt, two important and foundational modes of experience. Harrison did not however abandon his techniques of observational painting completely.

The foundation behind the selected paintings in the show, are works that faithfully record the Coral Canyon in precise, and astonishingly accurate detail. From these detailed works, which Harrison refers to as “bones”, enables the abstract elements to maintain uniquely emotive qualities, while simultaneously echoing close ties to the transcendental experience of nature shared universally.

Traditionally, landscapes have been one of the most inspirational subjects for artists to paint, and it’s rare to see an artist develop a truly unique way of painting them. Adam Harrison is one of these artists.

Maximilian Contemporary is please to present the next exhibition titled “Changing/Never Changing: A Personal Apperception of Nature”.

The show is for a series of recent landscapes by Los Angeles-based artist Adam Harrison. Most of the works were executed as an experiment during lockdown, while the artist would travel every day to the hills of Santa Monica to set up a “pop up” art studio to paint the hills of Coral Canyon.

Join us tonight for the opening from 5:00pm - 7:30pm. Adam Harrison, the artist, will be in attendance.

These are the last few days to view "Parallels" a two person exhibition by American metalsmith/visual artist Tavo Montavo and Mexican painter/printmaker Daniel Acosta.

The highlight of the show are these metal sculptures, designed by Acosta and welded by Montavo. There are five in total, and all have been attached to these wonderful "shadow boxes" made from reclaimed redwood from houses in the Oakland hills.

Thank you Melissa for visiting the gallery!

Stumbled across Maximilian Contemporary Gallery last week; it’s on Sutter Street. Loved the expressive strokes and lines of Nicolas Guzman. Highly recommend the show. The space is intimate and the Gallery Director is friendly and knowledgeable. Had a great chat with her and met her son, Max, the owner. Good times!
