Our archive has uncovered a German hand-colored copper engraving in French titled État actuel de l’Armée Russienne pour l’année 1769 (The Present State of the Russian Army for the Year 1769).
By the mid-eighteenth century, Russia had emerged as one of Europe’s great powers. Its immense territory, newly established capitals, and evolving administrative divisions fascinated the European public.
With the outbreak of the Russo–Turkish War (1768–1774), maps and reports covering military operations in Crimea, the Black Sea, and the Sea of Azov, documenting the conflict between the Russians, the Ottomans, and the Polish Confederates, were eagerly purchased throughout Europe, serving as a primary source of news.
The ranks of the Russian regiments included a considerable number of officers and soldiers originating from the German states.
This engraving was produced by the renowned engraver Jacques-André Frédéric in Augsburg, a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire. Augsburg was celebrated for producing magnificent hand-colored atlases for the European nobility and major libraries.
