The other day, I heard from Larry “Flame” Moore’s sister, and we shared some heartfelt messages celebrating his life and legacy.

It reminded me once again how much these photographs mean, not just to the surfing world, but to the families, friends, and generations who were touched by the people behind the lens.

Larry dedicated so much of his life to documenting the beauty, power, and spirit of surfing. His vision helped shape how we remember an incredible era.

Thank you, Larry, for your friendship, dedication, and everything you gave to the surfing world. Your work continues to inspire, and I promise to do my part to make sure these stories and images are never forgotten.

Sometimes the most unexpected moments become the most meaningful.

"I was at pipe I think, and this guy comes up to me and says Mr. Name is Doug Walker and I was in search of something to guide my next life project, find some of sign ,or path to point me in right direction.. so I went to swap meet and bought a box with thousands of slides, 1500⚡️⚡️would you mind getting together to see what you know. So I was staying at the most outrageous ranch house on the slopes of Mount Kaala insane view of north shore and he could tell from where he was something Special was going to manifest his life in a positive force ⚡️⚡️when I started looking at the slides …..I went whoa this is Magazine quality stuff… couple slides later… this was in surfing magazine….. this one was in Surfer Magazine…then that’s me ..surfing magazine…I remember this day… the surf was blah blah … can I film you talking about the pick…of course….looking at slide …talking about the details of the day…lol blah blah lol..
BINGO ⚡️!!!Make movie same as this concept…Identify the surfers in the slides…film them talking about the waves, board.Blah blah film film…put into a movie…. What are you going to call the movie…I don’t know…. Got give it some thought ⚡️Doug …later…

I never thought that one day in 2007 would change my life but it did. I had no fear and I documented stories for 3 years to share my vision of the importance of history. Where it led was the most beautiful thing and that was the friendships. As we lose our heroes I am forever grateful for the support and have continued to document stories. I now know what destiny means and I will be sharing more stories so we can all enjoy authenticity and aloha.

I’m heartbroken to hear the news of Larry Bertlemann’s passing.

I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to sit down with Larry, capture his stories, and share in that infectious laugh of his. Every trip to the North Shore, I made a point to connect with him. Over the years, he became more than a surfing legend to me. He became a friend.

Growing up in the late ’70s, Larry was one of the most influential surfers for me and my friends. His style, creativity, and fearless approach to surfing changed everything. He showed us that there were no rules, only possibilities.

Thank you, Larry, for everything you gave to surfing, for the inspiration you brought to an entire generation, and for the friendship and memories I will always treasure.

And of course, I’ll never forget the words you lived by:

“Anything is possible.”

Godspeed, my friend. Your spirit will live on forever. Aloha, Larry. 🤙❤️
