Lynn Sondag “Morning Sun Trail July 26 VI” watercolor on paper, 24″ x 18.”

In the exhibit “Morning Sun” the is work inspired by Sondag’s early morning hikes on the Morning Sun Trail in the Headlands, where the sun and fog linger together.

Artist Reception Oct 25th Sunday 2 to 4 pm

“Walking connects me to a place and weaves that place into my daily routine. As a kid, I walked a paper route every day, year-round, in and around my neighborhood. I was up at dawn to bring people their news first thing in the morning. As an adult, sunrise is still my favorite time to walk, when the world is still and quiet and I can take in the light with my full presence. Many of the paintings in this exhibition record my favorite sunrise walk in the Presidio, the Ecology Trail.

Several days a week, I drive to Marin County around 6 am and stop along the way at the Morning Sun Trail in the Headlands, where the sun and fog linger together. As I climb the switchbacks, I pass through eucalyptus trees transformed by sun-rays and mist.

Painting lets me savor this experience and the gifts of the world that bring joy and fullness to my life. Watercolor is especially well suited to subjects that are fleeting, ephemeral, even formless: water, sunlight, wind, fog. I’m inspired, and challenged, to capture their form. Making these paintings deepens my own connection to place, and it connects me with others who walk similar paths. The paintings begin that conversation.” ~ Lynn Sondag

"Matisse’s Femme au Chapeau: A Modern Scandal” traces the creation of Matisse’s amazing painting of his wife Amélie in her hat Femme au Chapeau (Woman with a Hat)
with color and brush strokes that caused an uproar. The collectors Gertrude Stein and her brother Leo acquired it. Bequest of Elise S. Haas to SFMOMA on condition to always be on view.
There are over 90 artworks by 40 artists from the early 1900’s until today that are on display.

The oil paintings of Lawrence Kushner focus on capturing extraordinary beauty within ordinary scenes, bringing patterns of light to evoke a deeply spiritual experience. “My work has been both painting my observations directly..., or painting scenes that I captured through photographs. Now, after having painted nearly seven hundred canvases, I am endeavoring to discern elements that are less apparent to the eye, and instead come from within. One might say that each subsequent painting is therefore a “revelation.” I find myself “turning up the volume” of colors, motion, and shapes to reveal how the scene can also reveal something more profound and nuanced.
