Shown is a detail from “Ficus Microcarpa Nitida “ oil on linen 30x 40″. The oil paintings of Lawrence Kushner focus on capturing extraordinary beauty within ordinary scenes, bringing patterns of light to evoke a deeply spiritual experience. “My work has been both painting my observations directly..., or painting scenes that I captured through photographs. Now, after having painted nearly seven hundred canvases, I am endeavoring to discern elements that are less apparent to the eye, and instead come from within. One might say that each subsequent painting is therefore a “revelation.” I find myself “turning up the volume” of colors, motion, and shapes to reveal how the scene can also reveal something more profound and nuanced. My ultimate goal is to depict not what is obvious, but rather to unveil a revelation.”– Lawrence Kushner Avenue 12 Gallery has art available to view 24/7 through our Lake Street San Francisco windows and on our website. Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 2pm to 6 pm. Appointments welcome. More artists and info on website.

This Work is inspired by Artificial Intelligence and Romantic Comics blending the visual language of vintage romance comics with the optimism, humor, and questions of our digital present. For San Francisco week we have the final week of Tom Colcord’s “The Fluidity of Perception-or- Being Both the Cause and the Effect” exhibit is in the gallery. Shown is Picatrix Lessons I – oil on canvas 14″ x 9” Tom Colcord is a painter and art educator based in San Francisco. Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, he holds a BFA in Painting from Indiana University Bloomington and an MFA in Studio Art from the San Francisco Art Institute, two experiences that shaped both his technique and conceptual foundation.

Fluidity of Perception refers to the “Landscape of the Mind.” Colcord’s paintings are psychological landscapes that meditate on the subjectivity of our perceptions. Disparate landscape and interior elements are collaged to create a dreamlike space that is logical yet elusive. The result is a painting that features many landscape elements but is ultimately a psychological space in the midst of being edited. The landscape suggests vastness, fullness, and emptiness simultaneously.
