"Matisse’s Femme au Chapeau: A Modern Scandal” traces the creation of Matisse’s amazing painting of his wife Amélie in her hat Femme au Chapeau (Woman with a Hat)
with color and brush strokes that caused an uproar. The collectors Gertrude Stein and her brother Leo acquired it. Bequest of Elise S. Haas to SFMOMA on condition to always be on view.
There are over 90 artworks by 40 artists from the early 1900’s until today that are on display.

Shown is a detail from “Ficus Microcarpa Nitida “ oil on linen 30x 40″. The oil paintings of Lawrence Kushner focus on capturing extraordinary beauty within ordinary scenes, bringing patterns of light to evoke a deeply spiritual experience. “My work has been both painting my observations directly..., or painting scenes that I captured through photographs. Now, after having painted nearly seven hundred canvases, I am endeavoring to discern elements that are less apparent to the eye, and instead come from within. One might say that each subsequent painting is therefore a “revelation.” I find myself “turning up the volume” of colors, motion, and shapes to reveal how the scene can also reveal something more profound and nuanced.
