E li is said, "Lie on the earth with you feet higher than your head when you are very tired. Roll your feet to keep from making noise. No one hears you and it rests your feet." She said, "Lonesome? Sing. When Indian sing he touch something higher than himself. Not feel good? Put bare feet on bare ground. Healing rise out of deep pulse of earth. Can't think? Close eyes and go to mountains in your heart. Mountains just a place but trip take you out of worried mind. High-priced medicine don't compare to natural. Reach toward sky and raise up on toes - several times. It might not help you - but who knows?" ~ All who go through among my people may find peace when they come in. ~

We know without being told when we have acted unkindly or behaved unjustly toward another. Intolerance, whether it is personal superiority or religious bigotry, serves only to isolate us from the greatest joy in life - the sharing of ideals and happiness and friendship. We must be patient and fair toward anyone whose opinions differ from our own. There is a much better chance of convincing those whom we hope to influence by being an example rather than a voice. It is much easier to be led than to be pushed and not so hard to be tolerant when we recognize within ourselves the reasons we are not always tolerant. It sometimes becomes habitual to be dissatisfied with everything we see others do. We don't take time to understand and know the basis for their actions. We often fall short of listening to them long enough to understand, and their next words or actions may explain it. We cannot afford to be intolerant, because no matter how good our ideas are, there is always a better one.

"It was good for the skin to touch the earth, and the old people liked to remove their moccasins and walk with bare feet on the sacred earth... The soil was soothing, strengthening, cleansing, and healing." --Chief Luther Standing Bear, TETON SIOUX– Touching the earth - getting grounded, centered. There is magic in touching the earth and feeling her healing power. This is especially healthy to do during a troubling time when our minds are racing or can't stop thinking or are locked onto fear or resentment. When I need to feel free I can go to the Mother Earth. The Mother Earth is full of life and love. She always gives her powers to those who come to her. The Mother Earth is alive. Today, my Great Spirit, let me remember to touch the earth. Let me slow down and live just for today. Let me be gentle, patient and kind.

Few things are mind-and-spirit-adjusting like putting our hand to a job that has been waiting too long. The bigger the job, the better our concentration. Work keeps the hands busy and frees the mind from raw nerves and injured feelings. A time to talk will come – if it is needed at all. Sometimes busy hands like walking feet can do away with things thought to be unsolvable. Decide to do a thing that no one else can do – a specific move away from pain. It can set the wheel to turn – maybe slowly at first – but soon you'll be on top again. ~ If white man wants to live in peace with Indian he can live in peace. ~

𝟭𝟴𝟡𝟲. L.A. Huffman"s photo reminded us that bridges were scarce. Crossing required a ferry, fording at a low point, or ice thick enough to be safe.

The gent on the right was pulling the ferry loaded with a buggy and a wagon. At left, a person was on the opposite bank. Huffman lived in Miles City (MT), along the Yellowstone River. However, the ferry was located at the Missouri River on the Mandan Indian (now Fort Berthold) Reservation in ND.

The photos of L.A. Huffman have been the subject of five books. If using a PC, click image to clarify/enlarge. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.

Don't fret. When you can affect the outcome of something toward peace, do it. But stewing about those things you can't do anything about is wasted energy. Many of our problems would disappear if we did not keep them going with our fretting. We nag ourselves into despair and shoulder guilt that isn't ours. No doubt we have reason to be upset, but who doesn't. The ideal solution is to love and let go. The practical answer is to keep our mouths shut and let the knots unravel. They will. ~ They do not work underhanded at all, but declare plainly that they want peace. ~

Pioneer photographer EVELYN CAMERON led an extraordinary life. She was raised in an affluent English family with servants. In 1891, she and husband Ewen established their ranch in Eastern Montana. Evelyn was independent and industrious. To earn money, she hosted boarders, sold vegetables, and learned photography. She wrote home, boasting of not having servants and enclosed photographs of her doing ranch chores. Note the English pancake saddle without horn.

The seminal volume on Evelyn Cameron is Donna Lucey’s β€œPhotographing Montana 1894-1928.” Before writing the book, Donna Lucey transcribed 35 years of diaries and printed thousands of photographs from Cameron’s glass-plate negatives. The extraordinary volume contains 170 photographs. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.
