📅 August 2 – August 31, 2025
📍 BlueStream Gallery, San Francisco
🕒 Gallery Hours: Wed–Sun, 12–6 PM

At BlueStream Gallery, three distinct visual languages come together to explore emotional depth, the realities of modern life, and the unpredictable layers of human connection.

Lines, as captured in blurbird’s work, explore the invisible boundaries we draw between ourselves and others—lines of identity, distance, and emotional space.
Laughs reveal emotional masks: playful on the surface, yet layered with sorrow, vulnerability, and quiet resilience. KUYO’s powerful JESTER series dives into this duality, presenting clowns whose vivid appearances conceal fragile emotions and hidden pain.
Luck, through Heesuk Che’s series inspired by rock-paper-scissors, reflects life’s instinctive decisions. Simple hand gestures become metaphors for strength, surrender, and separation—each work quietly observing the ironies of daily choices and familiar proverbs reimagined.

🌐 HJ Chae | Portraits on Landscapes 🌐
Imagining Lives Beyond Fragmented Images

In this poignant series, HJ Chae overlays fragmented social media portraits of youth onto reimagined landscapes drawn from digital maps.
Just as satellite imagery reveals distortions and voids, so too do these fleeting online images hint at incomplete identities.

By placing radiant halos and glowing rings around her subjects, Chae offers a quiet tribute—an act of care, visibility, and imagination.
Here, landscape and portrait merge, asking us to see beyond data and distortion, and into the presence and potential of lives often overlooked.

Reconstructing Absence Through Line and Imagination

As her exploration of satellite imagery deepened, HJ Chae began to notice the voids and distortions hidden within the data.
In response, she introduced lines and color fields—not just as structures, but as emotional and imaginative bridges across these absences.

Each line became a site of rupture and reconnection, transforming gaps in technological vision into expressive visual language.
Through this series, data-driven images evolve into painterly landscapes, expanding not just what a map shows, but what it feels.

🛰️ HJ Chae | Google Map Art 🛰️
From Technological Vision to Painterly Transformation

During the pandemic, when physical travel paused, Google Maps became HJ Chae’s visual gateway to the world.
Drawn to satellite images—especially of deserts and “undeveloped” regions—she discovered beauty in their imperfections.

Blurred spaces, fragmented layers, and stitched scenes from multiple time zones inspired a new painterly language.
These are not literal reproductions, but expressive, abstract landscapes that reflect the distortions of both technology and memory.

What happens when a map becomes more than a tool—when it becomes a canvas for imagination?
