July's History at Night program is just around the corner! Join us on Thursday, July 30th for our season finale featuring Assistant Professor at UT Tyler, Tim Seiter!

We often discuss life in Mexican Texas... but what was life like in Texas before Mexican independence? "Wrangling Pelicans" covers the environment of those living across the presidios in Spanish Texas. Books will be available!

Tonight's the night! Join us at 6pm for our History at Night series featuring James Bernsen and his book, "The Lost War for Texas."

We have all kinds of programs lined up for the July 4th holiday weekend! Celebrate America's 250th birthday in style by learning how the American (and Texas!) flag would have been colored red, white, and blue. We'll also have readings of the American Declaration of Independence and 1830s militia drills throughout the day.

There is more to a garden then just growing the plants. Plants must be harvested and processed for a variety of things. Come and learn about a few species of corn and sorghum that are were used for a variety of things (from brooms to cornbread). Help us process last years broom corn, and take home a corn recipe to try at home! Fun for the whole family with no digging required!

This upcoming weekend, join us as we mark the upcoming Juneteenth holiday with special programing today, Saturday, June 13th!

First, check out our new temporary installation, "Bypassed by Freedom but Building a Legacy," surrounding stories of those enslaved in San Felipe de Austin and how they impacted local and state history. This exhibit us up now and runs through Labor Day.

Then, head outdoors to our Villa de Austin exhibit for our Stories of the Enslaved program, where we will be talking more about those living and working in San Felipe and the contributions they made to the bustling town on the Texas frontier.

Can't make it to see us? Well, head on over to our friends at the Stephen F. Austin State Park - Texas Parks and Wildlife where we will be presenting on enslaved stories at 12:30pm in the Nature Center.

We want to give a big thank you to Chip Reed and the rest of his crew from Austin County Precinct 4, who came out to help us move a construction trailer off-site today. This trailer was moved out here to be the construction office when the Visitor Center was built in 2017-2018. This trailer served the past few years as a maintenance office, a warehouse, and an office for the project managers of the Villa de Austin exhibit and our new Maintenance Archeology and Retail Services building. This trailer is now headed to Sabine Pass Battleground State Historic Site, where it will continue to serve as office space. Thank you again to the Precinct 4 team for helping us get this trailer out of the four holes it created on its way off the site.
