Hello San Dimas. I wanted to share some photos of the downtown businesses from the 80's ahead of the Beer and Wine Walk this Saturday, the fifth, at 5:00 PM. It promises to be an exciting adventure featuring both current business owners and pop-up vendors. I hope you were able to snag tickets before they sold out!

I would like to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to the volunteers of the San Dimas Historical Society and gift shop, past and present. The dedication and hours whether it be 4 hours or 24 hours a week make for the success of this organization. Young people who may need hours for a school assignment all the way up to retired folks. Little physical activity is required. 😊If you are looking to make a difference in our community and help keep the history of San Dimas alive, please feel free to call 909.592.1190. We will answer any questions you may have. Also, we are very grateful for customers from all the surrounding cities that visits our gift shop and museum. It is so fun to meet everyone who comes out to support this wonderful organization. Hope to see some of you at the Wine and Beer Walk for an "Excellent Adventure" on October 5th.

Hello San Dimas. Hope you are enjoying the cooler days we are having. School has started for most kids and next week there will be more in the crosswalks heading to schools with A/C and pretty cool playgrounds. What do you think it would have been like in the 1940's? Forget tablets and smart boards - chalkboards and ink wells were the tools of the trade. Pencil boxes held treasures of crayons, erasers, and sharpened pencils ready for any academic battle. Bells rang and it was time for recess and playing on metal bars in the dirt. Fun was had by all. The site of this Grammar School was on S. Cataract and Bonita Ave. This was the 3rd version of the S.D. Grammar School. It was closed in 1968. More to come of the 1st and 2nd versions in future posts. The picture of the 1st & 2nd graders was taken in 1943. Know anyone?!! As the school bells rang and the sun dipped lower in the sky, I hope the school days were just as magical as the encroaching shadows of San Dimas autumn evenings.

Hello fresh food lovers of San Dimas. I can smell the bread and taste the melting pastries as this truck drives by on his way to the Johnstone Block building on Bonita. And how would you like fresh vegetables delivered to you from Sing Lee, known as the vegetable man. Last but not least, hauling empty boxes from the packing house on its way to the orchards to be filled. That is how freshness is done. Envious of Days Long Gone. Circa 1910

Our Story

Genevieve Walker compiled journals, pictures and newspaper items from the time she arrived in San Dimas in 1894 until her death in 1961. On June 6, 1966, the San Dimas Historical Society was officially chartered. We are committed to preserving our history by bringing together people interested in Southern California and San Dimas. Thanks to our generous and involved community, we are still discovering and collecting items which establish, redefine, and illustrate this history. Sharing these materials with the public for their enjoyment and education is our passion.
