University Galleries

University Galleries The University Galleries at USD proudly hosts three on campus galleries and the University's print and anthropology collections. The University Galleries are the primary fine art and anthropology exhibition venues at the University of San Diego.

Scattered throughout the length of the campus, the University Galleries—the Hoehn Family Galleries, David W. May Collection, the Fine Arts Galleries at the Kroc School, and the Hoehn Print Study Room—offer a wide variety of exhibition and educational programs during the academic year. The public is always welcome and all regular programs are offered without charge. Additionally, these spaces serve as active teaching laboratories for USD students and faculty. Every project that is presented in the University Galleries aims to engage undergraduate and graduate students in thinking deeply about the role of visual and material culture in our lives. Internship opportunities are available and participation is encouraged. Finally, the University Galleries eagerly collaborates with colleagues in the Art, Architecture + Art History program around installations in its student gallery, with the Associated Students in relation to the Student Life Pavilion’s Exhibit Space, and with the Copley Library staff around special installations. Almost a dozen exhibitions, small and large, take place on the University of San Diego each year as a result of this activity and thousands of visitors enjoy the opportunity to confront great expressions of culture in these venues.

Check out our new online exhibition, "Traditions and Transformations: May at 25," which surveys five years of acquisition activity in support of the May Collection. The objects in "Traditions and Transformations" build upon a much longer history of Native American representations that have been stewarded at USD for 25 years. For purposes of this exhibition, we’ve highlighted a few works that confirm new trajectories within this outstanding teaching resource.

Guided tour of the exhibition Christ: Life, Death, and Resurrection

As we approach Easter, revisit last semester’s exhibition of Italian Renaissance prints and drawings, “Christ: Life, Death & Resurrection,” through a virtual tour led by the Hoehn Curatorial Fellow for Prints, John Murphy. The exhibition featured Michelangelo’s drawing 'The Three Crosses', along with powerful images of Christ’s Passion by artists such as Filippo Lippi, Annibale Carracci, and Fra Bartolomeo.

In partnership with the Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center, and USD's own Department of Ethnic Studies, University Galleries is proud to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Chicano Park. A selection of posters celebrating Chicano Park Day was scheduled to open on March 30th, but has been postponed for the time being. In the meanwhile, with great respect for the artists involved, we are happy to share this online version of the forthcoming exhibition, together with guest curator Cesar's Castañeda's introduction and personal reflection.

*Pressing Matters* a virtual look at prints in USD's collection.
.
.
Bob and Roberta Smith is the moniker used by UK based artist, activist, and filmmaker Patrick Brill. Words are central to Smith’s art as his work is composed of slogans in a style one would normally associate with political campaigns or protests. Smith uses his slogans to convey messages of art activism and has involved much of his own efforts into vouching for the importance of art education. "What Unites Human Beings" stems from a speech delivered by Smith to the Parliamentary Group for Art, Craft and Design in Education in early 2018.

Happy National Cat Day! The two fancy cheetahs depicted here were included by Francesco Rosselli in his 15th-century print of the Adoration. These guys, and a particularly worried-looking camel, can be seen in the Hoehn Family Galleries as a part of our ongoing exhibition, "Christ: Life, Death and Resurrection."

Joyce, our collections manager, pulled out some of her favorite objects for the team: depression-era mosaic necklaces. The design is crafted using stone fragments instead of whole pieces, gypsum in place of white shell, plastic pieces, and lots of ingenuity. Because precious stones and shells weren't easily available during the depression, artists used recycled materials in their place, included toothbrush handles and vinyl records. Pictures here: Keres/Kiwa, depression mosaic necklace, ca. 1930s, gypsum, plastic and turquoise, A2011-17-8
