What: The Mint House Project (MHP) is a public art mural project featuring local artists responding to themes of social justice in the Barrio Logan community. The MHP’s physical location is a public facing mural wall adjacent to Barrio Logan’s famed Logan Ave. just around the corner from Chicano Park, adding relevance to the community’s unique relationship with murals telling important cultural stories. A significant element of the MHP will be ensuring the compensation of selected artists in recognition of their work.
How: Quarterly (4 Sessions a year), the MHP will put out a call-to-artists asking for proposals/concepts from local artists that respond to each Session’s selected theme. Themes will be based on social justice issues affecting San Diego as a whole, with special interest given to topics with pertinence to Barrio Logan/Logan Heights. Artists will be selected based on the strength of their proposal’s response to the Session’s theme with special consideration given to underrepresented groups. Each selected artist will be awarded $400 to offset the cost, time, and labor of their work. $200 will be dispersed upon selection (to offset material costs) with $200 distributed upon completion.
Selected artists will be responsible for their own installation. Each installation will be slated for the two weeks ahead of the community’s Barrio Art Crawl events to ensure each Session’s mural is unveiled to the public during the Crawl for maximum exposure and public impact.
Why: The MHP continues the community’s long-standing relationship with public mural art while giving new and less-established artists the opportunity to showcase their work to larger San Diego audiences. The MHP also ensures an equitable relationship with its artists that is predicated on valuing each artist’s talent and hard work by offering monetary compensation for their work in addition to promotion and public exposure. By focusing on themes of social justice, the MHP aims to provides a visual voice for a community that often doesn’t have one, on topics that deeply, and directly, affect members of the community.
