Empty boxes encourage creativity and thinking skills. Children can decide how to change the box into something they can use for pretend play, line a castle or cave! Then they can use their imagination and problem solving skills to turn ideas into reality. Mobile infants can crawl through large boxes or stack smaller ones.
📦

🍊
Ask your child to guess how many segments are inside an orange or a tangerine. Peel a tangerine/orange. How many segments or slices are within? Was your child close to their guess? Is it an even number or an odd number?

While washing dishes or playing in the bath create different size bubbles 🛁 Splash your hands around! Blow on the bubbles. See how big and small they are. This is the perfect time to engage in a conversation about chemistry and how mixing things together can change two things into something else!
🧼

🛳
This can be done at bath time or right in the kitchen! Gather some of your favorite toys or natural materials from outside and make predictions about whether or not they will sink or float. Ask children to explain their thinking - is it because of the size of the object? Or weight? This is a great opportunity to explain why something large like a boat can still float! (It’s because of gravity, buoyancy, and the amount of water a boat pushes out of the way).

National City 16 Weeks of STEAM

Greetings Friends! Join us on Friday at 10 AM Pacific Time as Fleet Science Center leads an activity to explore patterns and symmetry through Tie Dye. Did you know that people have been using minerals from rocks and dirt for over 350,000 years for pigments and that the dyeing of cloth using plant materials dates back to over 12,000 years ago?

Find out more at www.nc16weeksofsteam.org. And in the following weeks Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center and A Reason To Survive (ARTS) will also share activities during this time slot.

Sorting is a foundational element of math. Ask your child to gather their favorite toys in a pile 🧸 Then ask them to sort them in different ways: by color, size, shape... anything you can think of! Sorting helps children to make connections and classifications and is an important tool in helping to develop critical thinking skills. #math #DailyDoseofSTEM #EarlyChildhoodSTEM
