Congrats to Isis! What a great representative of the San Diego STEM community, and a worthy recipient of the Girls Living STEM Award.

And thank you @STEMecosystems for recognizing #girlsinSTEM who may one day become #womeninSTEM 🦋

Congratulations to Isis Jenkins, 2019 recipient of the Girls Living STEM Award! 🎉 Isis is one of two local students to have received national recognition from the STEM Learning Ecosystems Community of Practice. She has been coding with The League since 2016.

Isis exemplifies a young woman who demonstrates leadership qualities and inspires those around her through her passion for STEM. She was described by her amazing teacher Michiyo as determined, creative, professional, eloquent, proactive, and enterprising. As an outgoing and welcoming teacher, as a young woman from a group underrepresented in tech, and as a photographer attending an arts-focused high school, Isis smashes younger students’ ideas of who programmers are, and her story of how long she’s been programming and what it has enabled her to accomplish shows them the possibilities that tech offers. We are so thrilled to celebrate Isis' accomplishments today and look forward to all the great things the future holds in store for her!

Why the 2019 Nobel Prizes in STEM struggled with diversity

“Who wins the Nobel Prize is a way to determine who is a ‘real scientist,’ and if you don’t see yourself reflected in those prizes, you might not think of yourself as a real scientist,” Kimberly Griffin said.

Last year a study from Microsoft found that when girls had a role model that inspired them, their interest in the STEM fields nearly doubled."

Are you surprised?

Esther Duflo is the second woman to win a Nobel Prize in economics in the award’s 50-year history. She's also the only woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize in the sciences this year.
