Tularosa House of Art

Tularosa House of Art Tularosa is an untraditional space for presenting visual and performing art located in San Diego's L

Tularosa Space for Art is devoted to the creation and exhibition of art in San Diego. By day, it serves as either my work studio when I'm in town or it is available for rental by anyone who wishes to use its large work spaces and beautiful natural light for their photography, video or other business production. Once a month, I make it available to an artist, group of artists or arts group for th

e purpose of exhibiting art in its interior space. There is no charge for the use of the space other than a modest cleaning fee. My goal is to offer exceptional artists a low cost space to show work without having to share fees with a gallery owner. I chose the name Tularosa for this space since it's the name of the small town in New Mexico where my father was born and raised. The word itself is Spanish for the rose-like flower of the tullie (cattail) plant which is often found in river bottoms. I chose the name not just as nod to my own past, but to the vibrant present and past of the Logan Heights neighborhood. In the place where now resides Tularosa, the House of Africa once held its doors open. This art boutique not only carried objects of interest to the large African-American community who lived in the area, it also served as a cultural gathering point for the nascent black empowerment of the early 1960's. Upstairs and to the right, the local Black Panthers chapter maintained an office where noted figures in the movement such as Eldridge Cleaver and Angela Davis came to visit. It's my hope that this space can serve again as a cultural asset for the community while still respecting and maintaining the character of the Logan Heights neighborhood for those who've long called it home.

Our Story

The Tularosa House of Art is devoted to the creation and exhibition of art in San Diego. I chose the name Tularosa for this space since it's the name of the small town in New Mexico where my father was born and raised. The word itself is Spanish for the rose-like flower of the tullie plant which is often found in the swampy river bottom of the valley where the town is located. I chose the name not just as nod to my own history, but to the vibrant past and present of the Logan Heights neighborhood where the gallery is located. In the place where now resides the Tularosa gallery, the House of Africa once held its doors open. This art boutique not only carried objects of interest to the large African-American community who lived in the area, it also served as a cultural gathering point for the nascent black empowerment of the mid-1960's. Upstairs in the same building, the local Black Panthers chapter maintained an office where noted figures in the movement such as Eldridge Cleaver and Angela Davis came to visit. It's my hope that this space can serve again as a cultural asset for the community while still respecting and maintaining the character of the Logan Heights neighborhood for those who've long called it home.
