Denise Strahm is a photographer in Studio #2 and has been a Spanish Village Art Center member since 2008. Denise has a unique style that incorporates layers of images she has taken and they are compiled into mesmerizing pictures that you might question if you’re looking at photographs or photos of paintings. These are photo composites, using multiple images she has taken resulting in truly unique images. Some of Denise’s images are portraits of trees with interesting backgrounds as she adjusts the layers with the opacity, colors, and textures. Many of her tree photographs are from her Alternate Treeality series. Denise loves to create with a square format with the photo mounted onto wood and they are ready to hang alone or in a grouping. Denise also has beautiful photos from around Balboa park marking the favorite spots in sepia tones and full color patio scenes. Look for her nook full of holiday ornaments that are great for gift giving. Denise’s photographs are as small as 5” square, up to 18” square, as well as standard formats, and are quite collectible. Joan Nies is showing her oil paintings in studio 34A and has been part of Spanish Village for over 15 years. Joan has always been creative and originally had a career as an interior designer, then later turned to painting and mono printing. Most of her attention goes towards landscapes and some seascapes, and you’ll see that she has various subjects. Her style of painting shows how she uses the right light to create atmospheric scenes that have a softness about them. Some of her paintings look like the earlier style of California painters. Joan captures the feeling she has from the scene and conveys that feeling with her oils and her technique of painting. Half of Joan’s paintings are from a nearby location such as Balboa Park, and she takes photos of the area and paints in her studio. The same goes with her travel adventures. Enjoy Joan’s special oil paintings in 34A.

Meet Cyndy Campbell, an intrepid traveler that shows her awesome scenes through her photography. Cyndy has captured brilliant images from many countries and she has a “good eye” with an ability to photograph a perfect picture quickly. You will detect whimsy in some photos, also a uniqueness in her photos such as a painting of an angel on an ancient wall in Pompeii, or a grand scene at the end of the day in Africa, to trains and buildings from just about anywhere. There’s much of Cyndy’s work to admire and her love of nature, human elements and architecture are primary inspirations. Cyndy shows her photographs in studio #39 and has been part of Spanish Village Art Center for approximately 20 years. Cyndy’s website:

Welcome to Studio where Deb Gargula creates and displays her artwork. Deb uses colored pencils and soft pastels and it’s amazing to see a wide variety of different pencil colors and hardnesses at the ready. Deb explained how the oil based pencils are harder and hold a point longer, and there are wax based colors she uses to paint and draw on wood. Her style varies from graphic design to realistic and she will start a new piece with an under painting using water soluble crayon then applies layers of colored pencils.
Deb is a member of the Colored Pencil Society that is an international group for exploratory work. She’s also a member of a group called Art Telling where several artists (using their various mediums) will be inspired to create from one common word that is the catalyst to tell a story through art. Deb asks herself, What if…, what if I tear the paper, open and shape it to form a 3D construction. She will ponder how to take her skills to the next level and there are many fine examples of pushing the boundaries a little further in her collection of fine detailed works of art. Take the time to view her creative use of pencils and pastels and you will appreciate her techniques that she has developed.
