VIRTUAL MEMBER EVENT: JULY 17th

Join us on Wednesday, July 17th at 11:00 a.m. PT for an exclusive virtual presentation with Retired Rear Admiral Lawrence "Larry" Chambers.

Admiral Chambers will discuss his first-hand account of Operation Frequent Wind. Admiral Chambers was the CO of the USS Midway during the evacuation of Saigon. The events leading up to, and involved in, that operation presented substantial logistical and ethical challenges to the ship and to her captain. Admiral Chambers will talk about how he met those challenges.

His story has been the subject of documentaries, a TV series pilot, and many print articles. Admiral Chambers is a highly sought after public speaker on the subject of ethics in command, as well as in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Rear Admiral Lawrence Chambers during his 36-year Navy career logged a variety of “firsts:” First African American to command an attack squadron, first to command an aircraft carrier, and the first African American Naval Academy graduate to attain flag rank. He was the second African American to graduate from the US Naval Academy in 1952.

Admiral Chambers is the recipient of Midway Museum’s 2020 American Patriot Award. In August 2022 he received the Tuskegee NEXT Trailblazer Award. In March of 2018 he was awarded the coveted Distinguished Graduate Medal by the US Naval Academy Alumni Association. He is also honored annually in a charity golf tournament in San Diego bearing his name. After retiring from the Navy, Admiral Chambers had several other highly successful careers with government and industry before his final retirement. Currently, Admiral Chambers is the Chairman of the Board of the Retired Officers Corporation. In his spare time, Larry, as he prefers to be known, plays golf, duplicate bridge, and studies ballroom dancing with his wife Sarah Jones-Chambers while living at Freedom Plaza in Sun City Center, Florida.

Congrats to Midway's June 2024 Volunteer of the Month, Pat Alderman! A retired military librarian, Pat began volunteering with Midway's Library in 2014. Pat collects data, catalogs Japanese aircraft books, and drives two hours to the National Archives to make copies of Midway's Deck Logs. She really goes above and beyond. Thank you, Pat!
