On this day in 1943, at around 4 in the afternoon, prisoners invited the deputy commandant, Johann Niemann, into the tailor shop to be fitted for a suit at the Sobibor Killing Center, and killed him with an axe. Thus, the Sobiibor Uprising began.

In the end, prisoners killed eleven members of Sobibor's SS staff as part of the planned escape. Two or more non-German SS auxiliary guards who were in the wrong place at the wrong time were also killed. All of the prisoners remaining in Sobibor—some of whom continued to fight with guns and axes throughout the night—were shot by the end of the following day on October 15.

Soon afterward, the SS brought in a group of Jewish prisoners from Treblinka to dismantle the killing facilities and erase the traces of Sobibor's true function. In late November 1943, those Jewish prisoners were murdered as well.

Day 5 of our community’s trip to Poland was spent at Auschwitz-Birkenau. A deeply meaningful and sobering experience, made even more personal as we heard the stories of survivors from their children in our own community. It was a day of reflection and remembrance.

Our community’s Jewish Heritage Trip to Poland is underway! Arriving in Warsaw on Tuesday, they had a full day visiting the Warsaw Jewish Cemetery, Polin Museum and Warsaw Ghetto. To begin the day at the cemetery, the group marked the 3rd anniversary of October 7. Especially moving was the memorial for Alex Dancyg, born in Poland and living in Israel, who lost his life on October 7, 2023. The group wrapped up the day at the Mila 18 Memorial, marking the underground command bunker and headquarters of the Jewish Combat Organization (ŻOB) during the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

Holocaust literature, like Art Spiegelman’s Maus, at times ends up on Banned Books lists. Sometimes, it’s because the content is seen as too graphic for students, other times because of the content itself. No matter the reason, Holocaust literature deserves to be read — not just because of the content, but because of the conversations that arise as we learn about the horrors that were committed in this dark period of history.

Today, we remember the lives taken by Hamas in the brutal attack that started at 6:29am on October 7, 2023. Hamas murdered over 1,200 people, many being civilians, and took 251 hostages.

This was the deadliest single day for Jews since the Holocaust.

We will never forget. May their memories forever be a blessing. 🇮🇱

This week, we welcomed Cadets from Austin PD to our museum for our Law Enforcement tour! Throughout the day, they listened to survivor testimony, learned about the role of Law Enforcement in N**i Germany, and engaged with real-world examples from the time period. Thanks for joining us, y'all!
