National Preservation Month 2026

As we leave the month of May, let us note it is celebrated as National Preservation Month, honoring those who preserve our built heritage and noting the many benefits to saving and restoring our old buildings. Downtown San Angelo, Historic San Angelo, Old Town Historical Conservancy, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, Railway Museum of San Angelo, and many local citizens have worked tireless over the past decades in saving our past and making it attractive and useful to our community.

And, of course, we have Fort Concho! Efforts by Mrs. Ginevra Wood Carson in the late 1920s to “Save the Fort” represent one of the oldest, continuous such projects of its kind in the nation. Over the decades buildings and land have been acquired, restored, and used for exhibit areas, office space, event and rental venues, and other community support spaces.

Preserved buildings add character to our community; they support our important tourism industry; and they honor our past and the people who have built of city since 1867!

Running out of supplies is a nightmare scenario in the early years of Fort Concho’s operation. In such events where there is a delay in the arrival of extra food, forage, and other supplies, posts that are near each other can ask for assistance. For instance, Fort Concho’s post commander, Major G.A. Gordon, requested for spare forage from Fort McKavett to help tide them over until their shipment of forage arrives after a delay caused by road conditions as well as the lack of preparation brought about by the District Headquarters to adequately supply the post to last through the winter.

Fort Concho hosted a Memorial Day program on Monday, May 25 at 9:00 AM on the Parade Ground in front of the Headquarters Building.

C. A. Maedgen III of San Angelo, whom himself is a Vietnam veteran and active member of many local and regional historical preservation groups, gave a memorable talk for guests.

With dual efforts of our amazing Fort Concho Living Historians and the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, they provided the Memorial salutes for our fallen heroes.
And the San Angelo Central High School* ROTC Color Guard proudly displayed our colors to a crowd of 85.

Thank you to the Daughters of the American Revolution for providing refreshments for the guests.

And thank you to all who fought and died for our country and freedom! You will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸

A two-horse stagecoach trip from Fort Concho to San Antonio costed $22 in 1877—about $628 in 2025. This was considered among the cheapest modes of long-distance travel before the railroad reached San Angelo. As such, it would not be unusual for an officer’s family travelling to join their husbands and fathers on the frontier to have only enough money for their train tickets, payment for the coaches, and boarding and food necessities. Without easy access to banks like today, getting delayed with limited money in a stopover often poses as a major concern for the travelling family.

Sometimes, a soldier is detailed for administrative and clerical duties while on post. With plenty of paperwork and reports to be done, clerks are essential in the organization and upkeep of the fort’s records. Private Edward H. Harris of the 10th Cavalry Band was one such clerk, who also happened to possess knowledge about printing, attributing to his occupation as a printer prior to his enlistment. He was also the only one known to have this valuable skill on post at the time.
