Tomorrow, July 20, will mark the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing of the Apollo 11. Interestingly enough, little Saltville played an important role in this historic occasion!

“Hydrazine was manufactured for the Air Force during the 1960s from the products produced at the Olin-Mathieson site. It was used in the space program as fuel for the Titan II rocket and the Apollo lunar modul that helped put the man on the moon.”

As you all probably know, we're right in the middle of ETSU's annual research dig. We've also got some special programs coming up at the museum that you won't want to miss!

On Thursday, June 6, ETSU paleontologist Nick Brand will tell us about fossils that are found in Saltville, and how scientists use the geology of the region to understand past environments. Paleontologist Emily Simpson will explore the link between Pleistocene megafauna found in the Saltville valley and the regional formation of a unique, highland floral community, the grassy bald.

On Thursday, June 13, Chris Widga, PhD and Blaine Schubert, PhD will present a program on their current paleontological research in the Saltville Valley. Saltville fossils are an active part of paleontological research and are helping to train the next generation of paleontologists. This talk will review the most recent developments, including the age of the fossil bearing deposits, recovery of mastodon DNA, 3D scanning and printing efforts, and more!

Both of these programs will begin at 6:30 in the museum's conference room. Get in touch with the museum for more information!

Hello everyone! It's that time of year again--time for the annual Kids' Dig! If you have a child (or children) interested in dinosaurs, woolly mammoths, paleontology, or just getting muddy, this is something they will love! As always, this event is planned in cooperation with ETSU's paleontology department. This is a great educational experience that also happens to be loads of fun.

The dig will take place on Saturday, June 8 with a session for children that have completed grades 1-3 in the morning and a session in the afternoon for children that have completed grades 4-6. Registration is $10 per child. If you're interested, please contact the museum by email, phone, or a simple Facebook message. Act quickly--spots are limited!

Christine C. Helton Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Christine Helton. She was a wonderful woman that worked at MOMA for many years as an administrative assistant and membership coordinator. The Museum would truly not be what it is today without her. She will be sincerely missed by all of us.

Friends of Appalachia

I am a native of Saltville, Virginia - population 2107. My hometown, while greatly diminished from its company town prime, is a swell place to live. My hometown was the salt capital for the eastern coast for the longest time, and fosters one of the greatest geological, archeological, and mineralogical densities on earth.

Olin-Matheison produced alkali products for the greater part of the 19th and 20th centuries, providing Saltville with an incredibly stable economy. The US Government contracted Saltville as the provider for rocket fuel for a large part of the Apollo regime, and the fuel that first put man on the moon was brewed right here in Saltville.

Don't let the sparse population fool you - Saltville has more history than can be learned in a lifetime, and men have been drawn to the magical area before history began.

A touch of salt with your Civil War? We have Saltville in Virginia (briefly mentioned in the article below) that served a strategic purpose during the war.

Calling all genealogists! The museum needs your help! Our research library is always growing, which is something we are very proud of. We get a lot of genealogy research requests, and, unfortunately, we don't have a comprehensive collection of regional family histories available... yet. That's where you come in. If you have a well-sourced family history or family tree (relevant to Saltville or SW Virginia), we would love to talk to you!

We would like to interrupt your day to tell you that the member reception this past Sunday was well received and well attended! Everyone enjoyed catching up with old friends and eating good food. We would also like to take a moment and give Dr. Charlie Bartlett some appreciation.

At the reception, Dr. Bartlett was awarded a plaque for many, many years of dedicated service to the museum. Dr. Bartlett has served on the Board of Trustees and has been invaluable to our understanding of regional geology. To say that he's been important in the museum's history is an understatement. We are honored to have him!
