Utah Museum of Fine Arts The Utah Museum of Fine Arts at the University of Utah is the region's destination museum for global visual arts.

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA), located in the Marcia and John Price Museum Building on the University of Utah campus, is the region's destination museum for global visual arts. From ancient objects to the latest contemporary works, the UMFA galleries—newly reimagined and remodeled—showcase the breadth and depth of human history and creativity. The Museum’s collection of nearly 20,000 original works of art is the most dynamic in the state. As the fine arts museum for both the state and the University, the UMFA is a vibrant hub for cultural exchange among campus and community audiences.

UMFA’s Power Couples exhibition magnificently stretches imagination in exploring pendant format in art | The Utah Review

"Based on a broad theme readily comprehensible to all audiences, the exhibition is a magnificent introduction to the UMFA’s collection for newcomers and an excellent opportunity for long-time museum patrons to see existing works in a new perspective. It is a deeply gratifying intellectual exploration."

Leslie and Virginia spent some time at Fox 13's The PLACE this week. Hear about this month's Third Saturday art-making activity and how it connects with our fun new exhibition "Power Couples: The Pendant Format in Art."

There's a new exhibit at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts at the University of Utah. It's called 'Power Couples: The Pendant Format in Art'. The show features works of art meant to hang in pairs; they're called 'pendants'. This was a popular format for artists, and so you'll see a variety of different k...

This time last summer we were enjoying Chiura Obata: An American Modern here at the UMFA. The exhibition has now made it's way home to California after journeying from Utah to Japan. If you find yourself in Sacramento anytime before September 29, do yourself a favor and stop by @crockerart and check it out. ⠀

Curators Reveal Their Favorite Wall Colors for Showing Art

We've never been afraid of color here at the UMFA–shout out to the Guava Jam years–but curator Leslie Anderson's next choice to hit the walls is better than all the faves listed here.

Curious what she chose?

Tricorn Black, by Sherwin Williams. Yes, black! Come see this dramatic choice in "Power Couple: The Pendant Format in Art," starting July 11.

Nine curators share their favorite wall colors — a decision that constructs a sensibility for an exhibition, echoing around the artworks on view.

The UMFA's pathbreaking ACME Initiative has been awarded a $35,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. This is the largest NEA grant the UMFA has ever received.

We’re so grateful to the staff and to the many community partners and artists who have worked with us to help make ACME so meaningful.

The ACME Lab and its exhibitions are made possible, in part, by a generous gift from The JoAnne L. Shrontz Family Foundation. The ACME Scholars program is a collaboration with the University of Utah Honors College. ACME Sessions—bimonthly community meetups—are presented in partnership with Salt Lake City Public Library and have received funding from Utah Humanities.

Today's the day! On this day 150 years ago (May 10. 1869) the Golden Spike was tapped into place indicating the competition of the Transcontinental Railroad. American was connected East to West by nearly 2,000 miles of track. The country forever changed. ⠀

There are celebrations across Utah in honor of this historic achievement. An estimated 20,000 people will gather at Promontory Point to see a reenactment of this historic photo, now on view in "Race to Promontory: The Transcontinental Railroad and the American West" on view until May 26. ⠀

"Stanford historian Gordon Chang says most Americans know that Chinese laborers worked on the transcontinental railroad, but that’s all they know. Historians themselves haven’t been able to tell us much about the nearly 20,000 Chinese who built the Central Pacific line. So, Chang and his team have scoured the archives to reconstruct the lives, work, and legacy of Chinese railroad workers." - RadioWest

Chang chatted with Doug Fabrizio ahead of his talk at the UMFA tomorrow, Wednesday, May 8 at 7 pm.

Yang Yongliang presents the ancient tradition of Chinese landscape painting (shanshui) through a twenty-first-century, photographic lens. In his photographs, light boxes, and videos, Yang also explores the materiality of the photographic medium. Digital photography is Yang’s ink, and editing software is his brush. Similar to painters of the near and far past, Yang creates landscapes to reflect his view of the world, yet his photographic interpretations offer a critique of a dire reality—the rapid disappearance of nature in the age of extreme urbanization and modernization.

Yang Yongliang is the fourteenth artist in the UMFA’s “salt” series of contemporary art. This ongoing program of exhibitions aims to reflect the impact of contemporary art, forging connections to the global and bringing new and diverse artwork to the city that shares the program’s name, Salt Lake City.
