For the Future: Collecting at the UMFA 2001-2026 is now on view! This special exhibition highlights some of the best artworks the Museum acquired over the past 25 years, celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Marcia and John Price Museum Building.

With the support of many generous donors and community partners, the UMFA has been able to expand its arts programs across the state of Utah, launch exhibitions that engage with the most pressing issues of our time, and deepen the collection—all while ensuring the highest standard of care for the artworks and for the people who love them. As we look towards the next 25 years, For the Future offers a moment to celebrate the UMFA and dream about what’s next.

The UMFA’s collection of over 22,000 objects is the result of generations of curators, Museum employees, and the generosity of countless donors. One contributor in particular had a profound impact on the Museum, and her portrait is currently on view in the UMFA portrait hall. Natacha Rambova was a ballerina, a Hollywood designer, an actress, one half of a celebrity power couple, and had a serious career in Egyptology.

In the 1950s, the UMFA was a small gallery in the University of Utah’s Park Building. Donations made by Rambova and her mother Winifred Kimball Hudnut (also known as Winifred de Wolf) paved the way for the creation of the Museum as we know it. You’ll see both of their names on the labels of many objects in the galleries, and nearly every object in the Ancient Egyptian collection bears Rambova’s name.

Luke Kelly, associate curator at the UMFA, explains that “One of [Rambova’s] dreams was to build a museum that focused on symbolism in world religions. She never fulfilled that dream but took comfort in the fact that her objects were in a museum that people could come and visit.” (Daily Utah Chronicle, 2016)

We are thrilled to partner with Powder Art Foundation to launch the very first Land Art Week, October 1–3. Join us for three days of talks, tours, and site visits celebrating Utah’s landscape and its legacy of Land art.

Artists have been inspired by the landscapes of Utah and the American West for millennia. From ancient petroglyphs carved into rock to early photography documenting expansive vistas, this region has shaped artistic responses to place for generations. Utah is home to two monumental works of Land art from the 1970s—Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty and Nancy Holt’s Sun Tunnels—which continue to inspire artists today.

Art + Wellness: Yoga returns on Wednesday, September 2 at 6 pm.

Join us under the Onishi Yasuaki: Stone on Boundary installation in the Great Hall to de-stress and unwind with YogaSix Sugarhouse select Wednesdays through mid-October.

RSVP is encouraged for this free event. Attendees with RSVPs will be prioritized, but drop-ins will be welcomed as space allows. The Museum has some yoga mats available for use at this event, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own.

Applications for the Spring 2027 Registration Internship are now open!

This UMFA internship offers hands-on experience with the core practices of museum registration, including file management, archival rehousing, and documentation standards.

The UMFA’s Collections department cares for the wide array of objects in the Museum’s custody and includes staff across registration, preparations, photography, and conservation. Working collaboratively, these teams serve as the physical caretakers of the Museum’s holdings, ensuring their safe handling, accurate documentation, and long-term preservation.

Registration serves as the administrative and record-keeping backbone of the Collections department. Registrars maintain accurate and comprehensive object records and coordinate documentation for acquisitions, loans, and exhibitions, supporting the stewardship and accessibility of the Museum’s collection.

How does the Utah Museum of Fine Arts build a collection, and why do museums choose specific objects to steward for future generations? These questions are at the heart of the exhibition For the Future: Collecting at the UMFA 2001–2026, which celebrates twenty-five years in the Marcia and John Price Museum Building.

Museums like the Utah Museum of Fine Arts develop their collections deliberately, strategically, and gradually over time. The UMFA’s extensive collection represents a remarkable range of global artistic expression that is unique in our region. The Museum is the only institution in the state that collects, exhibits, interprets, and cares for artworks representing global cultures from the ancient to the contemporary.

So, art acquisitions must be carefully considered to enhance and round out the collection to reflect a range of cultural identities, historic periods, and artistic movements.

The opening of our next special exhibition is less than one month away! We can't wait to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Marcia and John Price Museum Building by showcasing some of the best acquisitions of the last 25 years.

Museum Store Artist Spotlight: Dorian Rosen - Ceramicist

Originally from Austin, Texas, and now a long-time Salt Lake City resident, home potter Dorian Rosen throws pottery and formulates glazes for pieces ranging from functional daily-use bowls to whimsical orbs and vases. Rosen formulates each of these glazes to suit his unique style and preferred mid-fire clays by using his science background.

Through his artwork, Dorian is working to keep one of the world's oldest disciplines alive in our modern age.
