February 26 - April 3, 2026

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. popularized the phrase “beloved community” to represent his vision for societies that embrace cooperation, unity, and connection. The Project’s educational programs connect Salt Lake Community College faculty with local students through in-class discussions and presentations. After participating in activities that explore Dr. King’s legacy and how students can apply his ideas to their own lives, participants highlight their own beloved connections with their communities by creating art that celebrates their individual voices and viewpoints.

In the exhibition "Hidden Life," the artist collective 4 Common Corners explores elements from the natural world that are often concealed from view. The subjects are seemingly unlimited, from bacteria to the heavens. Doppler radar, an ultrasound of an expecting mother, the life cycle of plants in the harsh climate of the western desert, threads of fungi interconnected just under the Earth’s surface, an abandoned adobe, creatures hiding beneath the depths of the sea, the secretive nesting habits of mother birds, algae, cyanobacteria … these artists each explore nature’s secrets through their own lens, coalescing in a remarkable collection, bursting with life and color.

Opening Reception

Announcing "Elmer Presslee: Mystical Forest" exhibition!

On View:
August 28 – September 26, 2025

Double Opening Reception with "The Uncanny Traveler: Surrealism in the 21st Century"
August 28, 5 – 7 PM

Artist Elmer Presslee is known for creating marvelously strange installations that surround the viewer with maximalist, multi-colored walls of old toys and hand-made creatures – concocting an immersive, nostalgic, psychedelic environment that fully envelopes you with countless little dudes, friendly fabric monsters, mythical mutants, and more. The Saturday Morning Cartoons-meets-Gwar aesthetic that he has carefully honed is funny, spooky, cute, irreverent, and disarmingly endearing, especially when you get a closer look at the finer details. A gruesome looking giant eyeball becomes adorable when you get close enough to see the small scraps of colorful fabric and found objects that make up the larger forms, creating a fantastical micro / macro experience.

The same can be said when you meet the artist, who’s humble, affable demeanor dispels any interpretation of hostility or darker themes in his work. Elmer, who prefers to keep a low profile and a mysterious biography (Presslee is a pseudonym), is a big sweetie who’s just out here making weird stuff and having a good time. So, let’s all do as Elmer does: have fun, channel your inner-child, and embrace the madness.

“The Uncanny Traveler: Surrealism in the 21st Century” features a host of wonderfully weird artworks by 39 local artists who are incorporating the century-old art movement into their current work. These exceptionally talented artists are reinterpreting and redefining surrealism, each in their own distinct ways. Some are processing surrealism through the lens of our modern times, while others move in a more nostalgic direction, and others still are envisioning a surreal future.

Join us as we explore the endless boundaries of surrealism from a wide variety of outstanding artists and, even more mind-bending, witness the impossible as curator James Walton distorts space and warps reality while attempting the ill-advised and utterly absurd pursuit of fitting 39 artists into a single 1,000-square-foot gallery space.

Special limited exhibition open through August 21: Celebrating 30 Years of President's Art Show!

In commemoration of President Greg Peterson’s first year in office, SLCC presents a special retrospective of President’s Art Show. This exhibit celebrates the decades-long legacy of SLCC’s annual juried show and its rich history of “opening doors” to all Utah artists.

Sourced from the college’s permanent collection and curated by collection and gallery manager James Walton, the show highlights some of the many pieces acquired from President’s Art Shows past, dating as far back as the late ‘90s, spanning the tenures of four past presidents, one interim president, and now SLCC’s current president Greg Peterson.

While honoring the past, we set our sights on the future. President’s Art Show ‘25 (the 31st iteration of the exhibit) will open this fall and will be the second to occur under President Peterson’s tenure, helping us to usher in this new era at the college under his thoughtful leadership, as we continue to foster our connection to the arts in Utah and beyond!

Thanks to everyone who came out on a cold winter night to celebrate the opening of Robert Füerer’s awesome solo show “My Old Man and His Mountains: The Trail of Tails, Trials, and Triumphs.” Rob’s oil paintings look glorious in the space. We had an amazing turn out and a lot of fun. Rob even sported his ancestral knickerbockers for the occasion!

-------------------------------------------

Swiss-born American painter Robert Füerer’s artistic journey is shaped by a rich blend of cultural experiences. The SLCC alumnus spent 21 years immersed in Asia's art scenes, where he learned fluent Mandarin, incorporated an intercultural perspective into his work, and founded three art schools in Taiwan. His time at the State University of New York, School of Art and Design, provided an ideal environment for Füerer to evolve as a painter where he received a full-ride scholarship for his best-in-show piece, George. Since earning a BFA in Painting and Drawing in 2009, his art journey has unfolded through narrative oil paintings. His series of 36 Dreams of Mt. Fuji is inspired by a struggling marriage, and The Beauty of the Father depicts his father's cancer journey, transitioning to the timeless subject of The Life of Christ. Each series is a chapter in his evolving narrative, expressing emotional turbulence and resilience on canvas. Now back in Utah, Füerer joyously immerses himself in the captivating landscape of the Wasatch Mountains, infusing his creations with the essence of the Alps in his homeland. His artistic journey combined with his understanding of Buddhism, Taoism, and Christianity inspires a harmonious fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics, treasured by collections, galleries, and museums worldwide.
