As we begin Memorial Day weekend, let us pause in remembrance of those who defended our freedoms, and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Pay tribute as you walk through our military section - be humbled as you think about their sacrifices, trials and tribulations.

Please contribute to our Veteran Biographies if you, or someone you know with Chariton County connections, served in the military from the Civil War to present.

Tuesdays - Saturdays, 1:00 - 4:00

🇺🇸🪖🦬🇫🇷 PVT Woods, James
15 June 1887 in Keytesville, Missouri to
21 June 1951 in Keytesville, Missouri
Buried: Keytesville City Cemetery, MO

WWI Service:
Drafted October 29, 1917, at Keytesville, Chariton County, Missouri, as Private (Serial No. 2,210,501). Initially assigned to Company I, Colored Infantry Regiment at Camp Funston, Kansas, then transferred to Company A, 349th Machine Gun Battalion, 92nd “Buffalo Soldier” Division for his overseas tour, and finally to 16th Company, 4th Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade until discharge.
(Trained at Camp Funston, Kansas).

Combat Veteran:
Sailed overseas from Hoboken, New Jersey, on June 10, 1918, aboard the USS ORIZABA. Served with the 92nd Division in France (Company A, 349th Machine Gun Battalion). Participated in the St. Die Sector (August 28–September 2, 1918) and other actions with the division. Next of kin listed during his tour: mother Minerva Williams. Returned from France February 28, 1919, and honorably discharged April 2, 1919 as a Private.

Service Context:
The 92nd “Buffalo Soldier” Division was one of only two African American combat divisions in the American Expeditionary Forces. At approximately 30 years old, James was one of the older draftees from Chariton County. He was among the original group who helped form the division in late October 1917.

Additional Notes:
James Woods, son of Taylor Woods and Minerva "Minnie" Williams, was a lifelong resident of the Keytesville area. He worked as a laborer and porter and had completed 8th grade. He never married and had no known children. He passed away on June 21, 1951, from coronary embolism due to arteriosclerosis.

Note: Although he is not currently listed on the official Chariton County 721 WWI Veterans roster (likely due to name duplication confusion with the other James Woods (Service number 2,210,936 from Dalton), his documented service record clearly confirms his service. He deserves to be remembered and added to the roster.

Findagrave ID: 144101981 / African-American
